    The appropiate question would be "What can't PHP do?", to answer your question almost any thing can be done in PHP.

    You can do whatever you want (programming stuff of course) using java, ruby, lisp or php. But php do it easily and faster. And programming with php you will be more happy all the time. Using java, ruby or lisp soon or later you will be so unhappy that you will wish to kill yourself to stop the agony.

    PHP is a scripting language, not really a full-fledged programming language.

    For example, PHP doesn't have multi-threading.

    You cannot do everything you want in PHP.
    PHP is not the most popular programming language.
    PHP is more commonly refered to as a scripting language. Meaning its primary use is writing scripts, not applications. This means PHP is quicker and easier to develop with, in general. As are Python, Ruby, Perl, and ASP.
    PHP is NOT faster at everything than every other language (especially REAL programming languages). Each language has it's strengths.

    PHP has no multithreading. PHP has no multiple inheritence. PHP has no dynamic methods. PHP has horrible POSIX support. PHP is unnecessarily verbose and limiting for a scripting language. Much of the standard PHP library doesn't even use OOP.

    PHP can do a lot of things, especially for webmasters. They have page rank checker scripts, backlink checker scripts, etc. etc.

    As a webmaster, I couldn't live without PHP!
