I am a newbie who wants to learn PHP/mySQL from home just through the books and internet.

Could any one tell me how much time it would take to understand the basics if the only things i know are C++ and basic HTML.

it wont take long if you have a little programming background, just work through a few tutorials and you should be on your feet in no time,

w3 schools and php.net are both good places to start.

Learning PHP is not a rocket science. If you are having a curiosity to learn then it is not to difficult. i,ll suggest you to go with any tutorial website like w3school.com and learn from there. As you said that how much time it,ll take then it depends upon your understanding power and also that how much time you give for learning in a day.
    Thanks......

Start with w3schools.com for basics of PHP and then you can go for advanced PHP (OOPS)

    http://www.w3schools.com/php/default.asp [basic]
    http://myphpscriptz.com/php-scripts-tutorials/object-oriented-programming-in-php/ [advanced]
