Not an e-book. I mean real regular, go to barnes and noble (or borders) and buy it, type book?

I've seen many. But at $50+ i'd like to have someones opinion.

    Thanks

A little bit old, but still a good book for beginner to intermediate -- Programming PHP by Rasmus Lerdorf and Kevin Tatroe (O'Reilly); has some animal on the cover.

Another one that I can recommend that's geared towards PHP5 is Beginning PHP5, Apache, and MySQL Web Development (Programmer to Programmer) by Elizabeth Naramore, Jason Gerner, Yann Le Scouarnec, and Jeremy Stolz (Wrox); red cover with people on top.

I really liked PHP/MYSQL Programming for the Absolute Beginner by Andy Harris. It's got mediocre reviews, but it worked great for me. And at 6 bones used from Amazon, it won't break the bank.

Rasmus is the creator of PHP; I read the book quite a few years ago and it was quite good. The first PHP book I read was PHP and mySQL for Dummies and it was a good jumping off point. I did start learning PHP in 2003 so it was a slightly different time than today.

I would suggest looking at the tutorials online as I know many people who have learned to program totally from the net. There are tons of good tutorials online that should be as good (if not better) than most books.
