Well, if you ask people here, you will see that many like those threads. Just because you don't, does it mean that this should put an end to it? Maybe, as long as it serves the greater good and pleases the membership overall. What I don't get here is the desire to moderate. It's been brought to my attention by people like WRMineo and Hodgedup who normally don't try to part take in too much of what should and what shouldn't happen here, and that made me think. There are many annoying threads on DP. We've all come to ignore them. Do you visit the endless DMOZ discussions or political threads? Just because you don't, does it mean they shouldn't be here? let's be realistic for a minute.
Ahhh... Forget it Do whatever you want...This thread was about the trend going on...Then another thread was started by someone else asking why so many people left General Chat. If one person posts something like this its usually dismissed which is fine but since this seems to be a bigger issue then I thought, I added my opinion...I didn't demand censorship and bans, etc - I just asked people to look at it from a different angle I made my point, I don't care what happens - I will just stay in the Webmaster section as I get more done that way anyway
I haven't posted in any of the Yart type threads since Hodgey has complained, have I? Since everyone seems to have come here, can you give me some advice on this: a dude is posting pics of his ex-girlfriend and him having sex onto a blog and she wants to find a way to shut down the blog: http://bloggertalk.com/showthread.php?p=6881#post6881 And no yfs, it is not my forum even though I moderate it, and you don't need to sign up to view it or look at it if you don't want to
I read alot of the other threads..but often I have little knowledge to add that is helpful or different from what is already stated by other members. Alot of people post that I agree with and I think a "I agree" post is rather senseless. I post on general so I get to know the members without adding a "yeah I think so also" post. If I find a thread I can help by adding something I do..but until then I stew my heels in general.
oh dear... actually no one has bumped the pypc type of threads up for the past 3 or 4 hours since this thread started. i would assume everyone got a bit worried that they might get on the bad side of someone or something to that effect. it did became a *bit* tense in here. i don't think it would be a very big issue if the posts here in GC doesn't add to your post count. i think at some point it does get annoying to find senseless threads but some of us needs the senselessness every once in a while. i for one, hang around GC to run away and unwind from all the seo, developing, designing, working, serious stuff during my work hours and get to know more about the long time DP members. i did enjoy reading through the opinions you guys had and thought i'd share my own. by the way mike, i think you could advice her to get an admin's email of the blog site. and if no action is taken, she might want to take legal actions. edit: oh crud just saw the blogsite. i would guess a very bitter ex did this? have her email the admin, ie the owner of blogspot, she can get a copy of this while it's up and if no action is taken, use the copy as evidence and take legal actions against the person who blogged this, assuming she knows who?
Thanks, and btw I am not worried. I realize that people are getting annoyed and that is because of people such as Hodgedup, WRMineo and Shawn saying so. I don't pay too much attention to grandstanding. People putting others down to make themselves look better or gain importance here. My advice is this: If you don't like the threads, then start your own. Add some quality and creativity instead of bitching. Hodgedup has said "I don't start threads, I just add funny stuff" and he does, Shawn hasn't expressed being annoyed until others did. I've started a lot of threads in here that people found entertaining. If the quality went down, then do something about it. Come up with something that people like and I'm sure the regular "person above me" posters will happily abandon their regular thread for something better. And btw I don't care about my postcount in GC ... I have enough posts
I have to add that it is annoying at times when people post meaningless threads, but sometimes people over react about it. I posted this thread a few days ago: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=42511 and genuinely was trying to help somebody. I knew it was only a dollar, but what the hell, a dollar is a dollar (it can get you twenty minute phone call). So anyway, I get raped for like 3 pages for a thread that really should have lasted 4 posts. In my opinion, if you don't think you will be interested by reading the titile, don't read the thread. It's that simple to me. If you don't like the stupid polls, don't go into the thread. Pointless posts I have no opinion about. But starting threads, atleast in my case, I think is over reacted about if the person starting them isn't just padding their post count. Or being a dumbass.
They didn't need to say anything for it to annoy me... I'm not oignt to make a long post of it, but 1) I left dp for a month or so because It was pissing me off so much 2) I know of a number of 'senior' posters who have left, and not come back because it was pissing them off so much. Either way - I love this forum, but It's been a while since I maid a point of posting in General Chat. PS - Thanks for alerting me to this thread.
And this is why i only started around 5 threads in general in total. I must admit: 1) Nino + Cute_Lara threads are just too much 2) I dont get half the threads myself 3) All these people trying to get their 25 posts by starting a thread called: "My fav pics of my keyboard" and posting 25 pictures one in each post. On the other hand however its just a forum. Im sure i can get over it.
I think there is a time and place for everything, and general chat seems to be the place for everything else lately. I agree that gc is not what it used to be, but I have to admit I've participated a few times in the stupid polls. I must have been really bored. Anyway, I really hope Shawn seriously considers taking away the post count for gc, I think that would really improve the quality of the threads and the posts in them. I'm getting sick of reading, "I agree" and "LOL " If you agree or think someone said something hilarious, give them some rep. That's what it's there for.

I added this poll in case Shawn is considering the 2 options presented: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=42883 I;m also curious how many people support what since so many have been voicing their opinion in this thread. Like I say in that thread, This isn't what Shawn is going to do, its just a poll
No one is talking about getting rid of General Chat... nor even people needing to "only post quality threads". No one is talking about over-moderating people either. If someone posts 5 sequential posts in the same thread (in a row), merging those 5 posts into a single post isn't moderation IMO, it's just cleaning up. What we *are* talking about is possible ways to IMPROVE General Chat. Vote for me/digg my site threads are no longer allowed (they can be posted in Buy/Sell/Trade -> Services) Maybe posts in General Chat (and possibly a couple other forums) won't be included in post counts (just an idea at this point) Maybe reputation will go away (or maybe everyone is reset to zero every month or something). Either way I'm not going to make a rash decision on how it all works (that would be ignorant on my part). Just seeding discussion about it at this point.
Well I think that a continuous YART dumpster was a good idea. http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=41566 Shawn, wouldn't banning all robots take care of all of these issues?
I take offense to that...Actually no I don't Ever since YART was locked, my software was upgraded so I don't post one liners, etc anymore Point taken though
Personally, I don't mind so much that General Chat is a vast wasteland. I do wish, though, that there was a way to filter out General Chat when using the New Posts link in the nav bar at the top of the page.
