This forum topic brings up and excellent discussion on what is "Heavily Promoted"? http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=518456 Is there a untold scale I don't know about? I am interested to hear your opinions, because I don't think there is any real answer to that question.
No its not a specific parameter but in the referred to link you have quoted you will see that the investment and promotion ratio in financial terms, that much more money has gone into promoting the site, in context to the receivable revenues earned to date imho That is how a business should be developed and "Heavily Promoted" all business's that are going to be successful need upfront paid investment Thats why the site in question has considerable value as the owner has made an investment and that investment has paid off as the site now has strong continuous traffic and an ongoing incoming revenue stream Certainly to me sites that are developed this way have considerable value and a very healthy future, if the new owner shows similar application and support
Ugh, good answer. Maybe I should sell mine . Actually I like it too much. I think one of the key factors is return on investment (ROI). Beacon has done a good job there.
In general, - Heavily promoted does not necessarily mean Well promoted. - Creating a buzz should be accompanied with a quality product. - Smart promotion is the way to go.
haha, very good point about heavy and well promoted. but 'heavily promoted' is just another subjective marketing term that is one of a thousand other terms used in advertising similar to words like 'best' and 'recognized'. There is really no point trying to fix a standard as nobody is going to follow it, why should they?
My guesstimates are that 75% of new directories do zero-$25 in promotion, another 10% do $25-$200 in promotion, the next 10% do $201-$500 in promotion and maybe 4% do $501-$1000 and 1% do more than $1000.
I guess I was in the 1% bracket... but it got me no where in the big scheme of things... I did get me noticed by "little g" however. I suppose that counts for recognition in some small way...
I think starting with a "Heavy promotion" and then letting it drop off could have disappointing long term resullts. I think that sustained investment into a project is essential as exploding into a market with a bang and then continuing with a fizzle may bring less than expected results. I believe it may be a smart idea to invest a lot of what your making into your project, as your earning it, rather than maybe promoting on borrowed money. It must be done intelligently otherwise it can be money and time poorly spent.
hard work smart investment lots of time put in has applied their brand to a large proportion of the market not always, but has invest high $xxxx to low/mid $xxxxx works hard to make their site useful promotes many different ways - backlinks/themes/submissions/avatars etc etc
Do your self favour Don't spend a penny on anything , until you''ve devised and tested a promotion strategy. Heavy expenditure only automatically means heavy expenditure It never automatically leads to good revenue E.G. Supposed you invested $10,000,000 in a Floppy disk factory today, an your competitor invested $500,000 in a flash tech memory key factory Who would probably make the most money ?
Excellent advice, take a hint from Dre too. [Dr. Dre] Young black Rockerfeller. Hell, a swiss and mozarella. Pockets sweller, gettin' money like a bank teller. 'Cause a fool and his dough soon split. So when you come across a fool get all that she be gettin'. Ladies, get your paper too. Don't expect for no man to support you. Keep it true, Thanks centime, thanks Dr Dre.
A very good post, i can say we have a set % calculated for this purpose and it will be across many mediums and monitored, to the extend we have outsorced our media section specific for that one purpose that is all they do and are amongst the best we could find, it will be one of the most important and cared for sections in what we do.
Sounds really good DownUnder, i like your method and it sounds cared for properly with being planned well and monitored.
I believe your percentages are skewed a bit. Apparently you've missed the xx,xxx factor which would further dissect the line.
Your right an0n, I think we can throw a .05% in that realm because it has probably only been a handful of folks. The sad truth is that a very high majority of new directory owners were figuring they would 'make it big' with very little (or no $$$) investment.
Oh definitely agree there. That's why we went from 100 a month to several hundred new directories popping up a month.
I have to admit that is probably the most common misconception about directories. The $ and work it takes to put a good one together. When I started lobo links I had no idea. Although, that does not upset me at all. Just the project I was looking for.
Yes now you know it's hard work and lots of it, and that is why not all owners flourish and prosper. Some don't try, some don't even care Keep up the good work floppydrivez
With fairness towards other people, i think a larger percentage start out caring and with good intentions but just underestimate the sheer time needed for a directory. Once the motivation drops everything connected to it will drop too. Also as directory owners, lets not put ourselves on some higher shelf, like other sites dont graft, plenty of other types of sites require the same hard work and investment.
So true pipes, you should try marketing something in the real estate industry lol. I been meaning to work out the details of the directory industry compared to other competitive markets.
