Article spinning is rewriting an article. It is useful because you can make 1 article into hundreds and therefore get hundreds times the traffic. I think it is best to submit all 100 articles to all 100 article directories for seo because then you get more back links.

Actually I heard spinning is used to avoid duplicate content. And if we are submitting the same article to 100 directories, google will count links from a few article directories, all the others will be ignored.
What you've heard is a bunch of newbies talking about things they don't understand. Duplicate content only exists within a single domain. Outside of that domain it's considered syndication which is a good thing. If you submit your article to 100 directories, you'll get links from all of them that search engines find. Nofollows probably won't show up on link checkers, but they're still passing small amounts of PR.
Link Building is the key..whatever white hat technique you use. Article spinning is one such method of getting good back links.
@Philoon : syndication is entirely different than duplicate content, If you copy something from wikipedia, and at the end of the content you are providing the link to wiki page from where you have copied the content, it can be considered as syndication. But in the case of article directories, we will link back to our site only, all search engines will count the content as duplicate. According to my experience I am getting a few links while submitting the same article to 100 directories, But when I tried Spinning the result is far far better.

Your second example is completely untrue. It's the exact same thing as example #1, except your linking back to your own site. But you're posting it on a different site. It IS syndication. As far as you not getting links, quit submitting your articles to spam filled, worthless websites. Pick some good, high quality websites and submit your articles there. One of the best websites you can submit to is EzineArticles. It generally takes around 7 days for your article to get approved, but it's completely worth it.
I have a list of over 250 high page rank article directories, But I am getting links from a few (3-4) directories when I use same article.
