A very good point. Just look around at how PR was manipulated and inflated to increase the value of a domain for sale. How many got burnt by that? Or got burnt buying links off of a site built from the inflated, undeserved PR? Caveat Emptor. They focused on the shiny paint job and neglected to check under the hood. But it is still too early to call it dead. Doesn't the toolbar update automatically? If so, wouldn't it be easier to take it off the bar completely first, rather than have webmasters freak out? If not, why not ease it in, like maybe when they released the new version recently?
ziandra: If they changed the checksum they would update the Toolbar before they changed so the old checksum would not report PR but the new updated version would. I am guessing that they are just having fun and it will be back on later today : )
I tend to agree. They are just giving us a "memorial weekend". Though, I do know that I am getting the same exact response now as I got several months ago when I was hand typing the checksum (and getting it wrong). Maybe they changed the algo, maybe they are eliminating external access to the ranking data, maybe the sky is falling. Come to think of it, I think i'll have another beer. That is one thing I can predict the result of with pretty good accuracy
Someone at WMW asked a very interesting question: If Google deficed to stop showing PR, wouldn't this motivate most of us to get rid of the toolbar? The only reason most people have it is because of the PR feature
Anyone notice the title of this thread is not mentioned until the second post and it contains a link to another forum? How is that?
Fry - I bet their daily searches would fall by at least a percent or two if that did occur...interesting thought. PR will probably be back by Tuesday; enjoy the weekend everyone! Cygnus
Well, this page is still up http://www.google.com/technology/ I would think they would take it down if they were getting rid of PR.
SEO / webmasters want it for PR. Does the general search population at large really care about it though?
I think I know the answer. There was another thread, started by prowler I think, it was merged into this one. Probably should have been the other way around. The sensational title caused this one to be the larger, faster moving.
Ive noticed that also. But......... Ive said it before. Google will probably be changing to something different. Trust Rank maybe. Think about the marketing value of PageRank. EVERYONE talks about it. They might not understand it, but they talk about it. That keeps google in the forefront of your mind. Something will be replacing it IMO.
Give me some logical rationale for it being dead. So far, the argument for glitch, etc. is beating the hell out of 'Page Rank is Dead'.
If you see following: http://www.google.com/search?client=navclient-auto&q= Its giving error, normally it doesn't give any error and is bieng used for displaying pagerank by number of pagerank calculation tools..
It hasn't been accurate in a while due to the 302 redirect bug. I am still in favor of a dump and recrawl, recalculate. I started a thread here: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=17221 I am unsure if it is related, I don't to push this one off-topic (too much).
