Temporary dips in SERP

Has anyone observed this phenomenon or am I imagining things? I submitted a link to a directory about five days ago. The URL puts a few new links in a section that appears on every page (articles, etc). I checked Yahoo and found 100+ BLs from this one submission in a matter of a couple of days. That is a good thing.

However, overnight my Google SERP fell several spots on all key phrases. It seems like I remember Google penalizing me for similar flurries of activity in the past. Any thoughts? Thanks

I think it might just be fluctuations some of us maybe seeing because the PR update is approaching. One of my sites has been up and down the last few weeks and it seems to come back within a few days.

I doubt the submission would have such a negative effect like that. I've done a ton of directory submissions before and it's done nothing but help in SERPS.

Every result, link updating, needs to get stable. I noticed that if there is no link adding for a site, the result is quite stable. If anything new is added, then results fluctuates for a while (measured in weeks).

Happens quite often to most of us. Get a few more links!

Fluctuations like that at Google is very normal, especially when the keywords are very competitive. Even more dramatic, you can see the fluctuations within the same day or hours apart. I often saw the search results are slightly different between morning and afternoon.

So when and in how should we build up our backlinks? I mean if I try getting links everyday, will it hurts the site SERP?

It's really normal and will come back again. Just continue your link building by getting more quality links.

Thanks for all the feedback. It sounds like I'll recover. It just makes me a bit uneasy with all the talk of a pending PR/BL update. I dropped two spots.

Prior to last week, my Yahoo BL numbers were approx 850 and now closer to 1,800. I might have submitted to 5 directories during this time. I'm not sure how that occured. I know I still have many more BL to get. Thanks again

I have decided to go back to Anylytics despite somes fear of putting such code on site.

That being said I am able to see such fluctuations much more clearly and yes on most of my sites I have seen a dip.
