I have seen some reputed people and companies do that. However the price will be a bit steep in those cases

I am not saying we should not be helping them. One reply is fine. But then 50 other people posting the same or slightly rehashed thing below it is of no particular use. Here is one such thread: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1993230

If they come on forums, any forums, and post for jobs....
They are not real SEO people.

There are few basic problems with SEO field:
    1) There is no school, collage or some established institution to teach and certify SEO professionals, so anybody can state that he is "best of the best"
    2) Although one of the parameters to SEO skill can pe previous work - many people just lie about it. For example I wanted to sub-contract somebody to do simple directories submissions on oDesc. I get tons of offers but 90% of them were fake "professionals" and when I asked to prove that they indeed do SEO for site N, they just couldn't. On of them was ready to work very cheap and told me that chopard.com was one of the sites in his portfolio :)
    3) There is time delay of 1-3 month from the moment somebody starts promoting a site till the moment results appear - this period allows unscrupulous people to take advantage on trusting customers/website owners.

The thing is, most of us target Google as our main traffic source. Google can find you information on a lot of different topics. It's easier to go to Google, type in "what is SEO?", and read a little information than it is to go to a forum, register, verify your email, find the correct board, post your question, and get a link from "Let Me Google That For You." I completely understand people with very specific questions or issues, but very broad ones like "what is seo?" or "how do I build links" can easily be found on Google. But I also understand it's not limited to just this forum or just this niche. I belong to a Mustang forum and the section of V6 Mustang gets flooded with newbies asking what exhaust to put on their car. Same concept, Google is full of answers (or the forum search feature is packed with threads).

The problem is that many people, particularly from the emerging economies see SEO as a way of making a quick buck, they have no understanding of the finer points of optimisation and are often using outdated techniques, if they are actually doing any work at all.

To be honest though, anyone who comes to a forum and believes what they are told by another new member, just because they have SEO in their name and does no further research before handing over the cash is a fool. Would you part with £1000 for a second hand car without looking over it, test driving it and possibly having a professional look over it?

Harsh reality. The sad truth is that they are not seeing the long term benefits. If they scam 1000$ today, then it might be a huge amount for the time being but your business stops there. But imagine if you can grow beyond a limit? Honest and trust worthy business.... The guys at seomoz don't charge 1000$/hr for nothing!!! (I know that they do to stop the influx of clients.) So why not try to grab some of the clients they rejected??? If you have the skills and have a reputation then it wont be that difficult

you are right about it.. the SEO scammers only think of today and never see the future.. all they want is to get a big bucks in an easy and fast way.. it is sad that this is happening in the SEO industry.. but I believe that as long as there are other SEO that do their job perfectly and would exert their effort in satisfying their clients then the industry we are in won't be a trash..

Everyone wants to be a "Web Guy" because they think that's where the money is. I don't care what the hot industry is, you won't make a dime if you don't know what you are doing.
Strangely enough, most of the SEO offers that I get come from India..kind of where webmasters in the U.S. were 10 years ago.

Could you elaborate more on this point?

The web is a fairly new concept for most people in India. its not because they dint know it dint exist, but because they dint have easy access until recently. Butits to be said that the growth of broadband customers is growing at a steep rate.

Many Indians are new to the site building field. So they just want to explore things. Then there are these scammers who look for easy money

I think what he meant was that, where the people are at in India, in terms of SEO for todays market - the people in the U.S were doing those things/tactics/services 10 years ago.

They are trying to catch up...

Yep.. Catching up on price that is... There is another trend why I see people thrashing SEO guys from India.... Not because they do not provide quality service, because they provide SEO at a much lower rate. I know that a US or UK consultant will charge atleast 2-5 times the amount I charge. This is not because I offer a service that is of any lower quality, but because I do not need that much of a profit margin. It's pretty easy to live in India for 200$ or less a month if you are single. With a family 500$ would be more than enough with a decent standard of living.

That does not give anyone incentive to cheat though... My take on this issue is that its not just the guys from India who cheats... There are many dishonest buyers who are from US and UK as well.. Its not about where you are from.. its about who you are and your principles.

So I would advice everyone not to go with where they come from but to go with their abilities...

And while you can live with just $200 or $500 a month in India; Anyone one in the U.S. would need $2,000 or $5,000....That's just crazy..
