Make sure that the keywords you are targeting are in your title and in the content of your pages. Besides that just make sure you have relevant and good content.

If you would ask for effective on-page SEO techniques, I would suggest you following:

    1. Title tag: Unique meta title tag with one or two keywords in it. Make sure to use a combination of primary and secondary keywords.
    2. Content & Content Placement: Google as well as other big search engines like quality and unique content. So try to start the content/text from best/top position of your web page. The more earlier search engines find your content the better it would be for them to index. However, you should go with the design of the site as well.
    3. Using Keywords: Most people prefer to use keyword density of 2-3% but since Google caffeine, there's no density, but try to use your keywords/phrases 1-2 times in a single page.
    4. Linking structure: The most important factor to increase link popularity withing site and to distribute Google PR site-wide. Inter-link your important web pages with each other and include keywords in anchor text as well. It helps alot in off-page SEO too.
    5. Sitemap: Include a detailed and linked sitemap of your site.

    Hope this helps.

If you are using a wordpress blog, install the free SEOPressor clone from bloggerhigh.com which will automate your onpage seo for the blog. you can also see what it does, and learn to do it manually, if that's what oars your boat.

but you should not forget about the market research.

For any business to thrive, it is pertinent to chalk out a marketing plan with clear vision and dedication. You should spend some time on budgeting, set milestones and then start with your on-page, off-page or paid marketing stuff.

According to me the content is king in on-page SEO. If your content is unique and relevant it means you have cover 90% On-Page SEO. You should have to use relevant keywords or titles and your URL and Titles must be keyword rich. Use CSS on the source page. Use Alt tag for images. Never do keyword stuffing.

Make sure that keywords you are targeting should be used throughout your website but without exceeding the keyword density limit. Make sure that your meta tags are done properly and your sitemap is well placed which would help Google to crawl your website easily.
