I just noticed a new section in the visitors tab of Analytics.
Anybody else get this? Anybody know what it does? Guesses?

"Benchmarking is an optional Google Analytics service that shows how your website's statistics compare against other industry verticals. In the beta version of this service, you are able to compare your site's Visits, Pageviews, Pages per Visit, Bounce Rate, Average Time on Site, and New Visits data against benchmark data from categories of other participating websites. You can use this data to gain broader context for your site so you can identify additional opportunities to improve your site's metrics.

This service is located under the "Visitors" section of your reports. Select "Benchmarking (Beta)" to view this report. Please note that it will take up to two weeks for the data to appear since it is being categorized and collected for your reports"

Interesting, Cant wait till it kicks of

"How do I choose which industry vertical to compare my site against?

To change the industry vertical you want to compare your site against, navigate to the category picker from the Benchmark report by following these steps:

    1. Log in to your Analytics account.
    2. Under the "Visitors" section, select Benchmarking (Beta).
    3. Once you get to the Benchmarking report page, click "Open category list" to expand the list of categories.
    4. Click the category you wish to compare your website against and then click "Select Category" to save your changes.
    5. The report will automatically populate the graphs with your selected category's benchmark line."

    Very interesting. Thanks Google.

    Cheers

I just hope enough publishers participate from the various "industries" to make the benchmarking data useful.

Sort of, I enabled that a few days back if I recall correctly, Then today I saw this new benchmarking thing.
To enable the benchmarking you need to enable anonymous data collection, as well as the Data Sharing..
Maybe when I enabled the Data Sharing settings a few days ago it triggered this benchmarking option?

Anyway, It should be interesting to see the comparisons, where we do okay and where we fail. Or in my case, where I fail the most... I can sense some frustrations coming up though...

I saw benchmarking the other day and activated it, but this is the option I can't see...
There is no "Open Category List" on my benchmarking page just the usual "data is being collected" blurb and the sample graph.

Is anyone else *not* seeing this "Open Category List" option?

Yes, same with me, I have nothing on that page apart from the graph and blurb..

I guess all the options will become available after the two weeks of data collecting..

You're absolutely spot on there, James. I logged in to analytics yesterday for the first time in over a week and the data is now there. It's a bit limited in what I was looking for (in terms of categories), but it's interesting nonetheless.
