ok, so i've been learning about seo for this company that i'm working for, and i've been doing some changes to our site to see what kind of movement i'd see. well, the movement hasn't been good...to say the least. here is what i did. 1. i changed the title tags to make them more specific to the keywords i'm targeting. 2. i added the keyphrase a couple more times in the content and anchor text. 3. and i added about five new backlinks. i know it's not much, but i also didn't expect to move down in rankings. we're in a highly competitive market, so it could be that our competition has been working on some seo of their own. but, i guess my main question is; is it possible to move down in rankings firsthand, right after you've made some positive changes, only to go up in rankings after a few more cache's. or, were the changes that i thought were great, actually detrimental? hope this makes sense
I would not say that your changes were detrimental, but still I do not know the exact changes. in order to get some experience, look at the top ranked pages in your topic and learn from theirs optimization techniques regards
I would get a copy of IBP http://www.ibusinesspromoter.com/download/index.htm It has a top 10 competitor report that will show you the basic comparisons between your page and theirs for a given keywordphrase. This is the best tool for the beginner to learn from. It also shows you what the other sites are doing. Great source of experience.
hi awaken, did the catanich post helped you? if still wondering around, visit the thread http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=436933 it might give you some ideas about keywords. regards
I did the same thing and went down in the serps. I then changed it back and was back at about the same position.
Hello, most probably you did something that is not as respected to the search engine as your content&optimization before. Still, it is always possible to make something that will raise your SERP. Good luck
It depends on how many times you added the keyword in your text. If you added it too many times, that could make your ranking go down. If this is the case, no, you won't go back up anytime soon. I would make sure that you don't have it on the page more than 4 or 5 times. You need to work a lot more on backlinks, that's what will really move you up.
My experience is that after changes such as this its normal to move down for a week or two any longer then that and you might have done something wrong. Make sure if you are using H1 tags that they are different then your title tags, I've been reading a lot about how over SEO can hurt your site not help it. Also check a keyword density program and compare the results to your competitors, if they have a density of lets say 5.4 and you have a density of 12.0 then you have a problem you can make sure your density is higher then theirs by a .5 or 1.0 but thats it. I also agree make sure you work a lot on link building, 5 links isn't much these days.
I would comment that it does depends on how many times you put your key phrase, but have in mind that there are other possibilities to have more times without bouncing back to you. Use the img ALT tag, use appropriate image names and use appropriate page names. How are you doing up to now? Regards
SKxprt, we're we've actually moved up from page 3 to page 2, but have consistently fluctuated between 2 and 3. we've added many more links, including some with reputable directories like botw and joeant. but, we recently decided that we're going to redesign the entire website, so that's a whole new ballgame...should be fun.
Hi, Good luck with the redesign. Keep in mind the basic SEO recommends. Just post if you stuck in some point. Regards
