My on-page optimization experiment: from 600 SERP to #39 in 1 month

I did an experiment with one of my client's websites that was ranking about #600 in the SERPs for a competitive keyword. This client didn't pay me for SEO, and only bought a small website to target his current client base and give local potential customers a place to get info.

The site has about 40 total pages (approximately) with some articles that the business owner wrote for trade publications and some media stories about the business. The client envisioned having a web address on his business cards, and it's probably nothing more than a vanity site for a business owner that already has plenty of business and money. I decided to take it to the next level.

    Here's how I did it:

    My On Page Optimization Experiment

Before anyone asks, I'm not going to give the actual keyword or the website. I'm trying to work a deal with my client to give me a cut of the sales that come in through the website (right now, online revenue is nothing). I think it has the potential to become a great niche revenue site, and I want a cut.

Simple tips that always work on any site. I think most are a must for any website to get any kind of decent PR.

And those things are overlooked a lot nowadays with webmasters buying up links, spamming their sites to all the social-networking websites and writing up articles that just don't give as much juice as they used to.

can i ask you a question please: in your anchor text links back to the target page, did you have JUST have the keyphrase as the anchor text, or did you include other words as well, to keep the link "conversational"

and if you simply used the keyphrase/s, and nothing else,in the anchor links, did you ever vary the way the wording appeared or was it exactly the same each time for the page the links targetted?

just asking as i am trying to figure out whether or not to VARY the anchor text links ....eg if i am using anchor links to get people to the page called "tarot card readings", would YOU go the "tarot card readings" route for EVERY link to that page or would you mix it up and have it vary, eg "tarot readings", "readings with the tarot cards", "card readings", etc?

my other question regards the alt tags....you say you put the KW in EVERY alt tag for ALL images on the page.....how many images were on the page and were any of them purely decorative....some places advise against using alt tags for purely decorative images, and nearly every article I've read says not to use the same KW in any more than 2 on-page images....obviously you followed a different route though and havne't suffered for it....i was just wondering myself what to do as some pages i have, say 5 images on them and the page is only targetted for one KW phrase...so my inclination would be to use the KW in all 5 cases, yet various sources say not to...

    thanks for your time!

Cosmicpixie, a good strategy is to put your most important keywords in the best links that you and the less important keywords in lower ranking links. Also, I wouldn't put my keywords in every alt tag, SE's might consider that as spamming, juts put them in the first and last if you have several images. Hope this helps!

I used only the single keyphrase as the anchor text. The links were placed in "conversational" contexts when possible. If not, I linked back to the home page with the text "Back to the foo mar shopping Home Page", with only the keyword as the anchor text.

Nope, I wanted to make a strong statement for the single keyphrase. I also peppered the secondary pages with occasional uses of the keyword without linking. Those pages will hopefully provide a better topical relationship and give them more weight which is passed to the home page.

If were doing a full scale SEO, I would do exactly that. For this experiment, I was working with a single keyphrase and focused on ranking it as high as possible.

For decorative images (the images in the actual graphic design and layout) the ALT tag was simple the name of the image file. I used the keyword in the ALT tag on no more than a couple of contextual images included with the content.

Thanks for your questions and comments!

    Hi,

Good luck with your top 10 ranking.

I would add some comments, but they are already in the thread on on page optimization. http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=445864

You did most of it very good as seen from the description.

You can also send us some code to see or the address when you'll feel you are on a safe ground. It will be nice to be seen.

    Regards
