I read an interesting thread here http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=216168 on a phpLD mod that takes Google and DMOZ content including descriptions. Isn't this taking things a bit far? Shouldn't it be the directory script owners duty to encourage thier users to 'be unique' and get thier own quality content as this should go to increasing longevity and credability? Are some directory script owners that desperate to sell their script they offer these 'mods' without warning of the consequences of the use of them which I for one think is way out of order. Shouldn't script owners have a duty to at least issue a warning that using this type of mod does have potential risks? Or that by using this mod you need to adhere to the ODP License All ODP RDF users must provide an attribution on pages on their site that display ODP data. This isn't a spitefull attack on phpLD, if they want to promote duplicate directories then that's their business, but misleading the unsuspecting as to the consequences of using what is effectively a harvesting tool isn't, people need to be made aware of this. As much as I'd be in competition with Dmoz as a directory owner I have never in my 7 years of directory ownership taken thier descriptions, and even avoid taking urls, as I firmly believe unique content is a must. You'll never avoid duplication of the category structures in dmoz as they are so finely tuned that its hard to do it any other way without causing confusion but the descriptions are the hard graft of the volunteers and should be respected as such. Or am I wrong here?
