They're like the popups of 2006, they're everywhere and everyone seems to hate them. Maybe Jacob Nielsen will have them in one of his top 10 lists of the year's most annoying internet things.
I've been pursuing different directory script feature requests such as advocating a bot foiling system like the phpbb2 anti-bot mod in various places for some time now. The good news is that the folks at Cantufind/PhpLynx are listening. They are getting close to releasing a new directory script and the 'anti-bot question style captcha system' is already implemented. Based upon what I've seen so far of their script, they are going to seriously challenge phpld for market share. If a domino falls on the internet, does it make a sound?
That script is looking like it could prove to becoms something interesting. I don't know why the others haven't implemented a text-based question style captcha. I've seen on a few home-grown sites and some of the blogging sites. The irony for me is I'm getting more idiots than bots. Oh, yes, a site that has Internet and web tips is a gift-related crafting site suitable for the gifts category.
I'll tell you what is a real pain... I don't know if you're familiar with this, but in some junior schools they do a colour blindness test where you are given a book with circles in and a number in the middle, all completely made up of dots. As the pages progress the dots become more and more similar in colour and harder to distinguish, and some of these verify images are like this and are almost impossible to distinguish. Then there are the irritating markings which APPEAR to be a letter or number, but aren't, and worst case scenario is all of your information isn't cookied and you end up having to fill the entire form out all over again!
I couldnt agree more, thats why we at phpLynx implimented a simple but effective text captcha that allows you to ask a question which is in simple text but HAS to be typed in, e.g; how many legs has a spider got! then you type in the answer, we even made provisions for those who wanted to use images like pictures of apples for example with a question like is this a banana? Sounds stupid but you have to type in the answer! Bots won't be that quick to beat this one! As for the form, I just treble checked and its idiot proof, if you get it wrong it won't default to a blank page, it will just reload a new question. (It's addictive)
I've had my text-based captchas up for a while now, and I'm sure they cut out a huge chunk of automated spam. But as for the idiots, there doesn't seem to be anything I can do about them. It always surprises me how many people will bother submitting to an irrelevant niche directory manually, instead of hitting the back button.
This thread is really interesting and there are definitely some great ideas! Even more so since I have a captcha control on my site. I'd love to know the number of people that it turns away. I don't think a captcha control is needed for a lot of sites but those that require account registration (not just submission) I reckon it is a necessary evil. This thread has got me thinking.....
I dont mind the images but I do wish they were all numbers. It would be so much easier to read that way...
With our script phpLynx pctec, you can put in what you want via the admin control panel, so if its just numbers you want, its just numbers you get.
I really hate the ones that have "cartoonish" fonts or a combination of several fonts all thrown together - what a PITA
