How does suicide bombing square with Islam?

Discussion in 'Politics & Religion' started by mcfox, Dec 6, 2007.

I'm confused - perhaps some of our Muslim members have an answer for my question?

What puzzles me is this - how is suicide bombing 'okay' when it is against the Muslim faith to commit suicide?

Thank you in advance for your considered answers.

Anything seems to be able to 'justified' when it's in the name of religion

Suicide bombing against civilians is undoubtedly prohibited, I mean some people in Iraq, for example are blowing themselves up in markets and killing fellow muslims that are just civilians, do you think this is what the religion really teaches.

    This is a good article:

    Thanks for the article. :)

I still don't get it though. How can some factions claim that suicide bombing is 'holy' (or whatever it is they say to justify it) when it is fundamentaly against Islam (to the best of my knowledge)?

Some mindless freaks may claim suicide bombings to be holy. But Islam prohibits violence, unless it is carried out in self-defense.

There are rules laid out in the Holy Quran, which can be called "Rules of Warfare"

    The Holy Quran says

    • {Fight in the way of Allah against those who fight against you, but begin not hostilities.Lo! Allah loves not, aggressors.}* (Al-Baqarah 2:190)
The above permission to fight clearly lays down the following conditions:

    (1) Never commit aggression; fighting is allowed only for self-defense.

    (2) Fighting must never be against non-combatants or non-fighting personnel.

Seek out Bukhari 52:54 , Muslim 20.4635 , and Muslim 20.4655 among others.

The 3 paragraphs you quoted are not from the Holy Quran.

    @DevilHellz

Yes, martyrs who are fighting legitimately, in a state of war and defense!!!

A martyr is one who dies whilst fighting in war etc, suicide bombing on non combatant civilians is not real martyrdom.

Maybe I should start a thread with a title like "How does inquisitions square with Christian people" or "Spreading Judeo Christian values throughout the world down the throats of other sovereign nations through WAR"

Then genuinely tell me what sparked the interest to ask a question like that? Was it something you just saw on the news? A story you just read on your local paper? What was it?

Great! But I fail to see a connection with the suicide bombers there. Did a Muslim extremist try to explode themselves on her lap?

Now you're being a tool. I said it was a post in that thread got me wondering about suicide bombing and Islam. My thoughts are that the majority of Muslims are against it both on the grounds of it just being plain wrong and also on religious grounds. What I'm trying to understand is how some factions appear to be able justify it even though it is against a basic tenet of the faith.
