How can you tell if Google is punishing you (because of the ad-network)?

You mean the text link just above the Coop banners? How do you know that's link-vault? It just looks like another footer link...

I stumbled across a situation like this also - I'm guessing I knew for the same reason you know ;) I clarified the issue with Shawn and then managed to work out which forum member was responsible for the site. They were unaware it was against the TOS and removed the Link-Vault code straight away. Seems it was an honest mistake.

I personally don't have any objection to running both networks on the same page, but I'm not doing it as it is against the co-op TOS and I don't want to get kicked out of the co-op! Given that, I didn't think it was really fair that others were doing it, that was my only complaint.

Perhaps it should be stated explicitly in the TOS, rather than leaving it up to (mis)interpretation...

Ya, my intention was not to get anyone banned for this. I thought 'maybe' Shawn would allow COOP banners with other network's text links, kind of like adsense. No such luck :(

It would actually seem right that you caould have both, allowing you to accumulate 'weight' and 'vaultage'...it was worth a try :)

Well considering that site isn't validating on the ad network right now anyway, you can't really kick them out.

It seems that the Coop ads have now been removed from that site...

No backlinks, no matter where they come from, are necessarily going to have a direct or immediate impact on SE ranking. All they can directly affect is PageRank, and that is only one of numerous factors determining SE placement.

Try doing a site:yourdomain.com at MSN Search (because Google's site: queries are of almost no utility) -- I think you'll find sites with coop ads turning up there.

I've noticed the same, in fact I've had to back weight off some pages to get them to go up in the serps.

    I need more static links.

Yup I noticed about a month ago serps began sliding on a downward spiral . I agree with static...more of them.

But I cannot forget the previous 3 months prior, what an amazing ride I almost made it to the top of 110,000,000 pages found arena. E dog Tong talks earlier in this thread about a good concept. I feel a little guilty mentioning it again. So if your interested have a look. What's funny is, this is pretty close to what I had already decided to do as it seems permanent linking of any sort is not ever going to be a part of this Coop :(.

I still have most of my good domains here as the effect with Yahoo and MSN is still very good. Google definately has some sort of a number with rotating links. I don't feel like the super hero I used to feel like with Serps. The good old days, add weight and they would come back to me.

Yeah I think google is definitely shifting to duration of the back links. If they come & go I think they make the value much less to none.

But even static links in this Co-op is tough because I believe google would want to see the links exist for months before crediting full value of the PR,etc.

Just my thoughts on it reading 1,000 variations of whats going on.

well ... months is one thing, but having a bot fetch a page on day 1, only to fetch the same file with all new links on day 2, and the same changing outbounds for 3,4,5 etc ... it doesn't require too much CPU power to do that.

This would be a form of cloaking and would get your banned from google for sure.

Witty Rejoinder of the Week Award

Tonight in response to this post

    I received this feedback:

which I humbly submit for the "DigitalPoint Moron of the Week Award".

Well done, whoever you are. An amazingly well-expressed quotable quote if I ever saw one, managing somehow to straddle that difficult balance between unintelligible terseness and mindless kneejerk stupidity. You should be as proud of your accomplishment as your mother and father undoubtedly are of what you have managed to do in redecorating your basement apartment in their home at the tender age of 40.

Best wishes for a successful future with many more similarly astounding achievements!

And you basis for such a comment is?

Personally I think you are wrong - but if you would like back up your statement with some facts then please feel free to enlighten me.

The ad network code already 'cloaks'.

Not exactually, cloaking is displaying differnet content for users and search bots.. look it up if you need more info.

You sure about that? There is nothing that is displayed (or not displayed) specifically for search engines.

Homer, how long have you been to the COOP?

The sites I placed the COOP on in Aug'04 / Sep'04 now ALL went to PR0 on many subpages (WITHOUT any content or external changes) and that makes me just still believe there's a new flaw with those rotating ads... at least after 8 months!

I joined Link-Vault .... it rocks and brought great Google restults in the first 4 weeks...

Give it a try... the slow increasing permanent links with text ad variations rock a lot over the flickering ones... at least in Google...

and #6 and #8 for major competitive terms with 10 links/day only in 4 weeks is better than all I made in the last year with 4 PR8, dozens of PR7 and many many PR6,5,4 purchased links PLUS the DP coop !!!

    cheers,jez

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. I have never seen any cloaking here, except from some of the users websites... :)
