I am a SEM manager, I know my stuff. But now my job position has transition to a PPC and SEO position. I have limited knowledge of SEO especially as search engines evolved so rapidly within the last year. GUYS! I need a good starting point to help my company website make a good turn around SEO wise. This is what I do know

Research relevant keywords to rank on. Write articles accordingly.
Make sure URL's are SEO friendly
    Develop good meta description tags
    Use h1 h2 etc....tags properly.
    Use keywords in headlines.
Have good clean code, fast loading pages.

    WHATELSE I JUST DONT KNOW!!!!!!!!!

Any suggestion or links to great, current info I can read on or get up to speed! I also want my company pages to rank in keywords we are not ranking in already....

Touched on linkbuilding a bit here http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1835616

Read Dan's sticky post here http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=413544

And his crazy thread here http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1396377#post12104573

Canonical posts good stuff on his site here http://www.canonicalseo.com/ he is really good with semantic markup and various site architecture considerations.

that should keep you busy for a sec ;) I highly recommend reading that stuff in its entirety. It will put you on the the right track. You will get a range of completely idiotic advice around here about shortcuts, linkwheels, directory submissions etc. Steer clear of the kool aid lol...

Make sure URL's are SEO friendly

This is largely a myth but still good practice for other reasons.

    Develop good meta description tags

This is marketing related and unrelated to SEO but still important

    Use h1 h2 etc....tags properly.

    absolutely

    Use keywords in headlines.

Yep, those are typically your htags

Have good clean code, fast loading pages.

    Yep!

    Hope that helps,
    Nigel

Your on page optimization is important but link building is where it is really at. You are going to need a clear step by step plan to get those links. Also be ready for it to take time. Google doesn't count links fast.

Remember to rotate the anchor text in all of your links.

    1. Directory submission
    2. Article submission
    3. Social bookmarking
    4. blog comments
    5. Email other webmasters (you need to know how to do this one to make it work right)
    6. Forum posts (weak and time consuming)
    7. Remember it is about Traffic and not search engine ranking.... ok it's about both actually but you want the rankings for traffic!
    8. Find your own style and other ways to leave links around such as press release and things like that.

These are a few steps. It takes work and time.

Yes you can use all above mentioned methods for promotion of your site. You can also check your competitors sites and promote your site where they have promoted their sites.

    Hi benniedm,

    Welcome to forum.

Mdraja123 has already given you guidance but I would like to add something.

After keywords research on the basis of KEI, you should see who are ranked on Google top 10 & why. Their title & meta tags etc can give you clear idea of what you need to do.

Also check their link popularity, Page rank, domain age to see how much efforts you need to do to knock them out.

    Best of luck
    Vishal

Don't be afraid to ask for help. This business is constantly changing, and you may be able to find people who are experts in certain areas that can work with you. Look for information from legitimate sources (not the "gurus" and their pie-in-the-sky promises) to get yourself up to speed. If your company will let you outsource, do so.

Your target keywords and content (both on-site and off) are the most important factors. If you're targeting the wrong keywords, you'll miss out on valuable traffic. And, if your SEO content isn't very good, it will turn off potential visitors/customers. Good SEO content (both on-site and off) can make you look like an expert.
