Just read that Google launches its own Wikipedia......

Google Inc. Thursday announced plans to launch a tool it said will allow users to contribute articles for a new online encyclopedia of sorts. Unlike Wikipedia, Google's new Knol (which stands for a unit of knowledge) will include the names of authors, who will maintain sole responsibility for editing the content.

The Knol encyclopedia is currently in an invitation-only testing phase, Google said. The goal of the project, it added, is to offer information on a wide range scientific, medical, geographical, historical, entertainment and other topics. Google will not edit Knol in any way or bless any of the content, Manber added.

So its the answer to some posts here What If One Day Wikipedia Began to Sell Google AdSense Ads?

The project name is Knol but i think it will be called GooglePedia because Google own all the major GooglePedia domains but not the Knol domains.

Google had better make all the links nofollow, or this is going to turn into Spamopedia.

I am just trying to think of this in terms of google patents ... I do not have the links at hand, but I do remember a patent by google about community ratings.

Perhaps the knol could then be used by google to help rank the authors website with more authority based on the knol review rating.

It is an interesting concept, it isn't new but it is different. It is different in the sense that it gives google another potentially massive website to generate revenue from in the form of adsense. They didn't need to spend $1billion+ on purchasing a site with a large volume of traffic... though it does not have traffic yet, it will surely quickly rise to become a knowledge hub for all types of users.

Google have branched out into various markets and with blogger, they have a strong foothold in the blogging world. With the new knol - this will give google a strong footing in the 'article world'.

Wikipedia bans one of my sites for inadvertent external linking. I want the ban to be removed for it was out of lack of awareness but who should be contacted in wikipedia? Will the ban stay forever in Wikipedia? Now I'm frustrated with wikipedia, so I might as well embrace Google's wiki.

    Nice, I didn't know this.

    Just doesn't seem fair with a $100,000,000,000 taking on a non-profit organization :D

If you think about it, why would Google want to do this? Wikipedia already does this and is established. This is just another Google waste of time. We still all remember the fisaco that ended up being Google Answers . They could not commit to that site/idea - the concept there also included "Experts" and getting money for giving answers which is very similar to:
Does anyone think this will work? Do note that The all Powerful Google can Do Anything mantra does not work as shown with Google Answers.

    I hate about.com
One of the worse sites for ads, and next to useless information.

Hopefully it will kill it off.

This is a ridiculous idea - there is already Wikipedia and that is adequte enough. I wonder how much of a boost they will give their own creation in their own search engine

Yes, I read about that just now. Why should we believe Google will stick by it this time?

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said an interesting thing about this:
The word Debacle is appropriate right now for this project.
