What If One Day Wikipedia Began to Sell Google AdSense Ads?

Discussion in 'AdSense' started by Minterest, Dec 9, 2007.

    Hello everyone,

How much would Wikipedia earn from Google AdSense ads if they began to sell Google ads?

I guess they will have a good CTR as most users of Wiki are non webmasters...... and they are looking for content........ What do you think? Any guesses?

I think Wikipedia would make more off Google Ads than they would from donations.

Aren't they 'not for profit'? And besides, the content is contributed by others, they'd have to use some sort of revenue sharing model

Not really, they could still implement it. I wonder if the google bosses have tried to contact them.

Just imagine if they implement a little AdBrite zone . How many bids would there be on that little spot? Easily a 4$ CPM.

Huge traffic sites reallly don't need AdSense.

It would be smart on their part. I am sure since they show up first everywhere in searches, they would make a lot of money.

Not for profit does not mean you can not earn money. It just means you have to find ways to spend it. This can include hiring more staff, staff bonuses, and investing into more services for your non-profit. You would be surprised how much many non-profits take in and pay out at the end of the year as bonuses.

I'm sure Google could make another Wikipedia site cheaper since they know how to get their sites ranked up high. The only reason Wikipedia is where it's at today is because of it's rankings.

I wonder why they don't in the first place? They would have earn millions given their popularity.

When I ran my own Wiki, the CTR was not that high. I changed the ad placement and everything. It might be because users are already accustomed to Wikipedia's templates without the Adsense ads. I have no doubt that Wikipedia would make tons of money from Adsense though. This is just my experience.

Non-profits still wan revenue. They just have to show it going back out through donations, expenses, or payroll. That why positions at non-profits can pay so well. Rolex is actually a nonprofit.

I don't quite believe, if Google wants to buy something, with their cash hoard who can refuse? Except Microsoft perhaps?
