It will destroy SEO, just like backlinks destroyed SEO, and Google changing its algorithm destroyed SEO, and devaluing reciprocal links destroyed seo.

In other words, no, it will not destroy SEO.

There is already a thread about this question: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1145741 (with poll).

I think this feature is good. Its like the DMOZ directory but on a large scale. Now people can finally working on quality content and not SEO and buying links.

You can manipulate it by voting up your own sites via the use of proxies. If Google were even to target a specific site that claims to use this tactic to increase their ranking, then it would be easy to do the same thing to a competitive website to try and have it removed as well. I do not see this being the end to SEO at all, just another adjustment that needs to be made by any SEO firm to continue to give good services.

Some of you guys are telling about the use of proxy sites and in that way promote a site or decrease a competitor.

But how is that possible when YOU NEED TO BE LOGGED IN to promote or demote.

Forget about that --- it's an easy way to alert the system of manipulation through logged accounts.

Have fun creating 1000's of google accounts!

Don't get it wrong. The search results preferences only applies to own individual google account and does not affect the universal ranking.

yea, its only in beta though. I believe its the coming of a new way to rank sites, where actually human input is taken into account with Google's alorithims.

Does promoting a site really affect the actual rank of a site or just for the person that is logged in that promoted it?

This is what the Google blog says:
"The changes you make only affect your own searches. But SearchWiki also is a great way to share your insights with other searchers. You can see how the community has collectively edited the search results by clicking on the "See all notes for this SearchWiki" link."

It only affects you, right now. This is what I am getting at, since it is a beta. I think that the ultimate goal is to base search engine rankings on human input rather than algorithms (or maybe a combo of the two?).

Read the article in the first post, this is what I was asking opinions about.

You can also see public notes. So it effects more than your own results. Basically, it's an entire different results section based on public placements by hitting the up arrow or x boxes.

You just have to figure out how to adapt to the change. Search is supposed to be about the user experience not how well some site can manipulate ranking.

Everyone benefits when the content a person searches for is accurately displayed.
