    Hi

I want to embed some video on a website.

    Whats the best way?

The videos are not on youtube or hosted anywhere, only on the server with the website.

    I need a cross platform/browser compatible solution.

    Whats your thoughts guys?

You may take a look at this step by step guide, it's regarding how to publish Videos in Your Personal Home Page or Blog. I followed it and successfully embeded video into my homepage, it's easy to understand, I think it deserves a try.

Hope it helps. Contact me if you have any other question about Mac.

Yep looking for the best way to get them on the website and play as quickly as possible.

I have a variety of different file types .mov/.mpg/mp4 etc etc

Some of the file types are large, so not sure if I have to compress/shrink the size of the file first? thoughts?

Can i convert them all to swf's? would that be any good? would they stream quicker and is it even possible to convert them to flash?

MP4 is the most compact format and programs such as Camtasia create these files from other types - but that's expensive and you can probably find free converters around.
Check out a post I have just made in another thread about problems hosting on your own server: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=2084890
Camtasia creates SWF's - but these are just a group of extra files for extra features - basic video is still MP4
Youtube and most free services limit you to using files that are converted to MP4 without SWF features - but you can upload in other formats for them to convert, just takes longer for the upload

Flash is good but it isn't cross platform. If you want to add Flash video to website, you can check flowplayer or JW flv player.
You can also add video to website via HTML5 technique, which is cross platform.

What for me, i prefer use Macvide FlashVideo Converter .It's prog for converting video to Adobe Flash and Flash video (FLV) that is ready for the web or ready to be streamed across the internet connections.

Flv player would be the best for it for sure but I suggest that you make use of youtube because it's easy to buff. Well that's only my opinion and suggestion as well :)

If you don't want to have it embedded through YouTube then check out using Amazon S3 for hosting and ezS3 for an easy way to get the video player on your site.

If you don't want your not video on youtube or hosted anywhere, you should convert your video yourself, with FLV video yourself. And you can specify the conversion settings freely (such as bitrate, sample rate, frame rate), so that you can get the FLV video with better quality
