Everyone should have seen this coming for some time now. With all the shady, corrupt practices of the editors, of course Google was eventually going to drop DMOZ.

ROFL. Could be the END! Oh no!!!

I suspect it's more a short term example of an algorithm doing what it was told instead of what was intended... but maybe you're right and it's the death knell for dmoz. Who knows... but it'd probably be a hell of a boost for a few economies worldwide when all us cloistered geeks leave our keyboards in unison and go to the movies or something.

Then again, I'll know it actually IS dead when I finally quit seeing "Dmoz is Dead" threads and blogs. Ironic that people won't *quit* saying it until it's true. Gotta love the net... reason just doesn't figure into it. ~

    Regards ~ Rob:)

DMOZ has been on it's deathbed for quite some time. When is the last time someone, who is not a DMOZ Nazi (editor), posted a thread praising DMOZ? It almost never happens, and when it does, it's some moron who is kissing arse thinking some nice editor will expedite his site's review. I would bet my '99 GEO metro that, if polled, DMOZ would have a lower approval rating than G. W.

Of course it does, google demoted the SERP of all the other directories very shortly after updating it's own ODP clone. Timing is everything!

Nice try DMOZ fan boy...BUT....the OP was talking about Google's cache. But since you want to talk about the link you posted above, where is the DMOZ homepage in those results? Hmmm. Not good. Also try this basic search for the word DMOZ. DMOZ's homepage is still not there. That = NOT GOOD.

I'm glad, wrote a blog piece on it a few months ago, lets hope this makes them think about whats been happening over the last few years.

They can either change their ways or do us a favor and get rid of it :D

Dmoz has really been taking a beating lately, including critical remarks from its founder.

Skrenta talks about how SEO's loved maniuplating the PR10 site and how it forced Google to re-engineer its algorithms.

Sorry to ruin everyones joyous celebration but it would seen that (according to google) the problem is that the googlebot has not been able to crawl the root page of dmoz due an incorrect 301 redirect. http://sphinn.com/story/6594#c9614 . "ZOMG! Google hatez da Moz!?!" LOL

Yes, and I'm sure that is the cause of "yet another directory" falling or dropping from the SERP over the last few weeks.

I don't really understand that 301 redirect thing, so please correct me if I am wrong... if there was a loop that sent www.dmoz.org to www.dmoz.org, then that same loop should effect more then just bots should it not...like make the page blink or flicker for the rest of us that got sent in circles till the server crashed from all the roll-over traffic? Or was it just Google that was being 301ed?

I'm not doubting you really, just thought the timing was odd, and the answer even odder (as it came from Matt Cutts ) So can someone verify this would/could be a cause?

Theres no reason for Cutts to lie over something as unimportant as DMOZ.. If he says it was the 301 it was likely the 301, if they intentionally penalized DMOZ for something else they should just wouldnt of got involved in the discussion.
