anyone please explain me the rep system at dp

i am wondering for quite some time now. what is the idea behind the rep system ? who gives you reputation?
please explain.

 

Other members give you reputation, if they find your post helpful..

They give you negative rep if they find it annoying or in any harm to the integrity of the community - cant believe i just said that

Also I'm guessing if you do a service for someone they'd +Rep you (Good samaritans are always nice)

 

I never looked at that before. Guess some little kid got upset that he got put on ignore. Too bad that people can give (or take) points without identifying themselves.
