Hi all. I was hoping I could get some good advice. I am currently using a hosting company that I fear is regarded as a bad neighbourhood. I have 2 dedicated servers with them and have been with them for 3 years. I have recently been following another DP thread and have read other articles specifically about this. So, as much as I do not want to migrate (pain in the ass) I may have to . If anyone can recommend a rock solid hosting company with a good reputation I would really appreciate hearing about it. Thanks
There may be some here. I know mia (DP Member) offers hosting at www.mia.net . I've been with www.dathorn.com for two years. I have three reseller accounts and manage another for a customer. All in all, about 40 web sites. Very responsive trouble tickets. I keep hoping/waiting for them to offer a dedicated/managed server option.
US: asmallorange.com UK: allabouthosting.co.uk IT: tophost.it They are all very very cheap and provide good service, especially for the money they're asking for.
Some web page hosting providers are better at doing somethings and not so great at doing others. Rather than say anything bad, here are some good web hosting service providers, I've used/I'm using right now: - Cpanel hoster www.home-port.com (a little expensive for amount of storage and bw, but stuck on keeping them for their great technical support, for nonserver specific questions). www.hasweb.com (great for single domain sites, love their great support). www.surpasshosting.com (I love their reseller accounts, reliablity, and massive features for a multi-domain kinda guy like myself). [Rumor has it, they're support is great cause they are hasweb.com ] - hsphere (not a big fan of hsphere, but works well with non-techie taskes) www.webgemshosting.com (now I've had accounts with them in the past, good support and great prices for small accounts with many add-on domains) DISCLAIMER: they went through a restructuring of their servers, the upgrade was suppose to add to the great reliablity, but it came at a cost. Fewer addon domains for their most basic accounts. As you can see, I have serveral you can check out. I've 'tried' other hosters, but I really don't want to mention bad experiences since they're are so many hosters and odds are you will not get into them. hth, tom
You can check out www.webhostingtalk.com Look for the best using the search tool. Heard that dathorn, varhosting, site5 are good hosting company basically u can find alot of host there. Even midphase is a member there.
Thanks for your help. Had to cuckle a little Tommyd. One of your recommendations is who I already use . Maybe I'll stick around mouchous gratis
I signed up with ASO today. Seem very efficient. And geez did I live in the past! Never seen Fantastico before. Talking about all-in-one solution with CPanel. HELM sucks big time now...
Congratulations TOPS30! I am happy to know that you've made that choice! Now, isn't that a cute name and brand? (of course there's much more to that!)
Tops, if you don't mind what/ who is ASO? I have heard of Fantastico never used it. Do you find it help? You mention a al in 1 solution...how so? Thanks
Mind if I ask which hosting company that was, and your option of them. Since I'm typically a low-maintenance customer, I don't think I put many of my providers through tough tests, like other customers must. thx, tom
TommyD, I'll reply to your question. ASO stands for asmallorange.com. I recommended that company, with other 2, as they are very good for a number of reasons, support, prices, flexibility, interface, even their name is cute, and their website, very fruity I would say. To be honest I rarely use all the features and the services that a host usually provides, but so far so good, and it's many months now since I signed up. The others I recommended are good too. I would add united-hosting.co.uk PS: I have no interest in gathering clients for any of the above, actually they might put up prices if they get too many!
I just found out about Fantastico myself. It installs and configures programs in your web server. I installed OS commerce with one mouse click last week.Fantastico is indeed fantastic!
Tommyd who is behind curtain number 2 and 3. They are actually the same company and the answer to your question. Thanks Austin I must learn this.
I recently found a host that I feel is perfect for my small needs, (it's not my site or host so don't contact me about it) http://ciaoweb.co.uk/hosting/index.html It's cheap as hell and doesn't have many customers, it's all still runing clean.
This is kind of funny...April 2005 is when I posted this thread. As of Dec 2005 I was finally forced to migrate, which is a bit of a long story. The long and short of it was my server was hacked again through an insecure webform and used to broadcast spam originating in China. I was reported to authorites (including Google and banned) and my server was shut down before I was aware of it . So my lesson was secure your server, forms, phpbb forums, perform regular security audits, etc. My (x) host has been banned from Google and has a slew of blacklisted Ips. Unfortunately I can only suggest who not to use for hosting. My new host seems really good but not enough track record yet to give an educated opinion.
The Chinese IP management is no good. Too many IPs are used to send spam. It is the responsibility of the governing authority to make sure IPs are not abused. However, due to the bureaucracy of the officials, there's no way to control. Sorry for the terrible experience you had Homer. My own DSL service provider is spamming me frequently and once my home PC server was hacked from their IP. Damn it! Does anyone out there recommend Godaddy linux servers? I want a stable server that's really uptime 99.9%, and really fast - relative to the cost of course. I used to use Parcom.com, low price and good service, but not always accessible from China where I'm from. You know they ban this and that a lot. Really considering Godaddy, hope you help me. Thanks buddies.
I dun see anyone in webhostingtalk or DP will consider godaddy. I mean their domain registration is good, but not the hosting. And their linux server seems to be too good to be true ... 250G of BW for $4/month Heard that godaddy hosting has a lot of down times. So i would suggest you consider other hosting company. A few good ones are: asmallorange.com site5.com and you can find alot of reviews of hosting company at webhostingtalk.com
