    Hello,
I searched for it but could not find this topic in the forum, sorry if its a dublicate post.......

Amazon has started a beta test where it places contextual ads on third-party published sites, similar to those delivered by Yahoo or Google in their networks.

Everyone thought MSN would be the next major web power to deliver contextual ads and share revenue in a network of sites. How wrong we were. Amazon has joined the game well ahead of MSN's forthcoming breakup with Overture in favor of its adCenter service.

Amazon Testing Contextual Ad Program with Affiliates

Amazon.com confirms it's dipping its toes into online advertising. The retail giant is testing a program to distribute third-party contextual ad links to its network of affiliates.

Though Amazon won't say who is providing the ads, a spokesperson says the retailer and the affiliate will each receive a cut whenever someone clicks through. Similarly to Google AdSense or Yahoo! Publisher Network, the ads are targeted based on the content on the page. The links will appear on the same pages as affiliates' links to products on Amazon.

"We believe that by working with a third-party to provide Associates with links to relevant Web sites, in addition to products on Amazon, that we can help them make more money from their sites," Andrew Herdener, an Amazon spokesperson, told ClickZ in an e-mail exchange. "This will help us maintain long-term relationships with our Associates community that provides an important source of traffic to Amazon sites."

News of the beta test spread through the blogosphere after Chris Beasley posted about being approached by the retail giant.

So far, only hand-picked Associates are participating in the beta test, and Amazon won't say whether it plans to roll the advertising out further. The text began January 27.

A number of different providers distribute contextually-targeted advertising to smaller publishers, including Google, Yahoo!, Miva and Kanoodle.

yes... a great one... & since Google, Yahoo, Amazon & Msn (soon) are in the battle, so they wont only think of advertisers but also find publishers may be we get new features... may be more cost per click or more.......
so I think in the end of 2006 the scene will be totally changed...
    lets see

It is nice indeed! but despite of the fact that the new emergece of Amazon in contextual ads battle will break the monopoly of Google Adsense. However, it also has negetive effect on those who stick to one company.

Let's say I dont want to switch to Yahoo, MSN or Amazon, I only want to stay with Google because of one million reasons ...

Since there are more alternatives for the advertisers, so some of them, or even worse, a lot of them switch to the other advertising networks to promote their products. That means Google will have less ads to display, means less income.

In order to keep advertisers to stay, they need to do sumthing, and the most likely scheme is lower the cost per click ... and the publishers will have less than a cent for a click :D. Or to prevent publishers from running away, they need to increase the effeciency of their network, and the most likely scenario is to increase CPS ... :D .... dont know what will happen ... God bless us ... and bless Google ....

I think all those giants when compete with each other wont let their ads be displayed together in the same page.
