Keyword is the very important part of optimizing. Before you can do on page optimization you need to find the right keyword first. Not all of the keywords that is ranking for your site are useful and will bring lot of targeted traffic. That is why you need to do keyword research by using keywords suggestion tool. Google suggestion tool is the best tool to find related and synonyms of keywords. After getting related keywords, find the traffic of each keywords and the number of search result in search engine then compute for KEI of each keywords. The formula of KEI is [ KEI = (traffic/search result)*traffic ] . It is better to target keywords that has high KEI which is greater than 1. If the KEI is less than 1 it only means that the keywords is very competitive or useless to target.
In the most generic sense, keywords are the terms that you enter into the search field of an online library catalog, database, electronic index, or Web search site. If you are researching the impact of computers on writing instruction, for instance, you might use the keywords writing, teaching, computers, technology, instruction, and learning. Keyword density has always been a topic of discussion in SEO and internet marketing forums. The reason why it is deemed important is because in the older days, keyword density was one of the most important factors to attend to. And keyword phrase is a set of words typed into a search engine query, and also a set of words that accurately describes the content of a single web page or web site. There is a difference between a key word and a key phrase. An example of a key word would be " flowers ". Although everybody would love the traffic that resulted from a top position for the phrase mortgage, it is quite unrealistic to achieve without a lot of relevant content, many high grade inbound links and a top notch website structure. The problem faced is that " flowers" is far too general a term. It is much better to choose a phrase which explains the content of the web page in more detail. This not only helps the people who are looking for relevant search engine results, but also has a greater chance of achieving a search engine position. An example of a key phrase would be " flowers expressage ". There are tools available to help you research key phrases and determine how popular the phrase is. When choosing a key phrase, it is important to place yourself in the position of a consumer. The word that you choose for a particular product may not be the one that a consumer may use when trying to find it.
Welcome sewebomaster! KEYWORD EFFECTIVENESS INDEX (KEI) - The KEI compares the Count result (number of times a keyword has appeared in our data) with the number of competing web pages to pinpoint exactly which keywords are most effective for your campaign. DETAILED EXPLANATION The KEI is a measure of how effective a keyword is for your web site. The derivation of the formula for KEI is based on three axioms: 1) The KEI for a keyword should increase if its popularity increases. Popularity is defined as the number present in the "Count" column of WordTracker. This axiom is self-explanatory. 2) The KEI for a keyword should decrease if it becomes more competitive. Competitiveness is defined as the number of sites which a search engine e.g. AltaVista displays when you search for that keyword using exact match search. Exact match search means that a search engine searches for only those sites which use the keyword exactly as typed in by the user. It is the equivalent of entering:
Although keyword is very important do not over focus on keyword density. Many years ago this works very well but it's now less effective than before. Google always changes its algorithm to filter unnatural content on your pages and now places more importance on terms associated with your content and your linking network.

Hello everyone Keywords are indeed one of the best way to let the crawler or spider know what your site is all about specially in Google.. but Matt Cutt says Google do not recognized meta keywords tag for rankings. http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?p=12534472#post12534472 What can you say about this? I was having a thoughts about this..
All I want to say that Google is very trickier and so are the Google guys, so dont ever completely believe what they say and besides SEO is not only about Google, yahoo still values META KEYWORDS.
I agree with checking out SeoBook, the science and art of SEO optimization is one of those topics that requires some research to best understand. Search engines and the best way to make websites friendly to them, so that they can post top in rankings if based off of several factors, keywords being one of them. If i remember correctly, SeoBook has some videos on YouTube which are free and give a nice little overview. One thing that you want to keep in mind is that the technology that search engines began with when they would index a web page in the early days is far different than what is being used today, and thus old methods of blasting the same keyword over and over in the title, meta tags, etc was rewarded early on; however today is not. It appears that lately content is king, and those things that promote it. For example: content, the back links that promote it, original written content, and well chosen words are some factors that help in ranking. You have to keep in mind that the job of the search engine is to direct people to the best possible choices for their queries. Keywords can play a major role because it is a single, or string of keywords that are used to navigate through the internet. Any one can tell you where to grab some keyword statistics, but what you have to discover is what the information means, and how you can use it to attract (or direct) the audience (Traffic) that you want. Since you have asked some specific questions I will try to be specific to answer the ones I can... A keyword is a single word used to describe what your website is about. They are listed in the tags section of the html code. One keyword then a comma then a space is the format. 'Example: Hungry, cheeseburger, Best' A keyword phrase is a search string that someone will type into a search engine to find what they want. 'Example: best cheeseburgers to eat when you are hungry' Keyword density from its early implementation is a thing of the past in regards to spamming a single keyword. Having said that, some unique content that uses a good amount of certain keywords may make a search engine algorithm think that the web page more valid, and thus rank higher. There are a lot of strategies, of all kinds, and SEO is NOT based just on keywords. Hope this helps, btw i think I'm going to grab a cheeseburger...cheers!
Very detailed articles on this matter exists already, just ask Google. It's so public it can get, why re-type all here?
