Create some kind of unique content that traditional media wants to use.

Did anyone mention, offer free headline servces to other websites?

And then some poor soul like the OP sees it and believes it!

Discreet, awesome post. I believe after getting enough posts into your blog, I would spread the word about the site to my friends. Make it easy for them to tell others about your site by adding a tell a friend script on your site. Word of mouth can go a very long way.

Concerning doing research, I took advantage of my flier miles and subscribed to a couple of trendy magazines. Actually found a couple of good ideas out of them for sites.

Anyway, just my 2 cents worth.

that's true clancey, coz then the site would not need to depend on search engines for the traffic

Having said that, it should help to have the pages optimized. i.e. keywords in title tags, URL, anchor links bla bla bla....
Search engines can be a major source of traffic with very little effort..
But sound advice though, if the traffic comes, it's a bonus,..if not, oh well, there are still those other sources...

Backlink is one of the factor to promote your website. The more the better.

 

A few more ways,

1. Add a signature line in your email with your website URL mentioned.
2. Have your URL printed on your business / visiting card,
3 .Run a contest and offer a copy of whatever you are selling in the prize.
