Web Directory FAQ

Since a lot of people ask about free web directory resources I've decided to create a post of most value free web-directory lists. When browsing these lists you’ll find over 500 free resources to submit your website to. The lists below are updated frequently.

Website description, keywords and anchor text
When submitting to web directories you should first take good care in writing a description for your website, find related keywords and write an anchor text. Then decide in which category your website fites the most. Tip, try searching on google: "main keyword" + site:dmoz.org (for instance http://www.google.com/search?q="internet"+++site:dmoz.org) this way you’ll find matching categories for your website. If the specific category isn't in the web directory, try emailing the owner or find related categories in that directory. Don’t submit your website to web directories when it’s not finished yet.

Web Directory Script:
There are lots of web directory scripts, the biz-directory is one of the most popular one, it’s an easy to manage script. A new directory script from dvdual is the phplinkdirectory script. A great free script with many features, it’s gaining popularity quickly. So when creating your own web directory take the time to create a unique directory for instance with specific topics (niche directory) or a web directory with a unique layout and easy to navigate.

When using the biz-script you can use a mod-rewrite module to make the directory more search engine friendly. If you are using Adsense to make money with your directory and or you have specific other questions about directories in general about web directories check various threads in this forum.

Submission tip:
Use the toolbar from http://www.roboform.com/ with this toolbar you can easily store forms typed by you. So when submitting your website to a web directory, you only have to find the correct category then hit a button on the toolbar to automatically fill in the forms.

spondishyI selected those lists of free webdirectories based on updates, those lists of free webdirectories are updated frequently, easy to navigate, have additional information and more.

 

maybe a seperate section that divides general from non general directories?
