the thing with advertising in the newspaper is,it will be direct traffic.
when ad networks see abnormal traffic without a referrer it pulls up a red flag as potential click/view fraud.
if you are getting a lot of direct traffic, you'll want to send an email saying that your advertising that way.

Sure you can advertise where you want (if you have enough money of course :D)
Only crappy traffic (surfs, bots, etc.) is not allowed with AdSense.

Newspaper and television ads are VERY expensive, but can be rewarding if you set up your site well.

This is 100% allowed. You are allowed to advertise your website in any media.

Of course you cantadvertise your website in a newspaper. You can put it on a billboard, your business cards, anywhere. When Google signs you onto adsense they are assuming you have a website with valuable information to offer, and hopefully you do. Look in any magazine and you'll notice that almost every advertisement or article has a website listed somewhere. If your website provides zero benefit to anyone except the Google ads that are shown, then I guess maybe they would have a problem with it, but if you have a website like this you would be better off spending time or money on getting some content or valuable links that are not advertisements to put in your site so you can build up some repeat visitors and good traffic.

    Yes, you can do it.

Just don't use sites that send automated traffic.

As long as you are advertising the content on the site and not just so it gets more views. Then it should be fine.
