I Need Vacation Suggestions

In June/July, Alaska is hard to beat. I lived in southcentral Alaska for 15 years. The weather is mild, days are long (there's really no full darkness).

You mentioned outdoor activities. Both months have spectacular king salmon fishing on the Kenai River (you'll want a guide; plenty of them for hire). You can fly across Cook Inlet to watch the monster, salmon-eating brown bears from a close-up platform. From Seward, you can boat out on Resurrection Bay and do a half-day trip to the matchless Kenai Fjords. There is wilderness hiking everywhere.

If you want city life, Anchorage is a cosmopolitan city with great hotels and restaurants, plenty of cultural activities, street vendors, a major international airport, and so much more.

North of Anchorage is the famous Denali National Park (formerly McKinley Park). Tours up there will take you to see the grizzly bears in the wild, not to mention Mt. McKinley itself, which is North America's highest peak.

Another good way to do Alaska is to take a cruise-fly trip. Cruise up the inland passage on major cruise lines. Then disembark for a southcentral Alaska land tour.

So much to do and see. It seems like we hardly slept up there in the bright, long summer. Anyway, if it is of interest to you, I heartily recommend Alaska. June/July temperatures will range from the 70s daytimes to 60-ish at night. Warmer as you go north (inland).

Why do you have to leave your own area or the country?

Why not rent a vehicle or even an RV and travel to historic places throughout Illinois or neighboring states.

How much do you know about Illinois' "former" capitals of Kaskaskia or Vandalia?

More historic places in Illinois.

Seriously, the cool thing about historic places, is that most have a good selection of B&B ... quaint, quite and generally romantic.

 

We've actually thought about Alaska. I may contact you for a little more info if you don't mind.

I already spent five days there last November. I was miserable after three nights.

That looks pretty sweet. Has anyone been to CR? Seems like it would be a good place to go in Spring for about a week or so.

 

I hear Iraq has some beautiful scenery at night.

On a more serious note - Traveling around the better parts of South America for a few weeks would be a dream.

Besides, I've pretty much been to all of the states around here...many times. Really the only places in the US I haven't been are the New England area, most of California up to Washington and heh, basically the entire Northwest I guess.

I loved the Southwest. Especially The Zion National Park Narrows (and the Subway). Some of the places we went to in Utah were like being in another country. Definitely people I never knew existed in the US. (and I'm a big fan of the TV show C.O.P.'s)

yo-yo, do you (or anyone else) have any specific recommendations in South America? We were going to go to Peru a few years ago but I got sick.

Anyone been to Japan? (SVZ)

 

I've never had the pleasure of going but it will be the first place I look into when I do finally take a nice vacation.

Well you could do a great trip to New Zealand and Australia around that time.

The northern tropical areas of Australia are great to visit then. There's plenty to see in Western Australia, Queensland, and the Northern Territory. Scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef. Kakadu World Heritage Park. The North Western Australian deserts plus much much more.

Then you could head down to the South Island of New Zealand for a ski/snowboard trip and check out the amazing scenery.

There's so much to see and choose from in both these countries you'd probably need a good few months.

I watched a show recently on the box jellyfish in Australia. It seemed like big deal - do the locals consider it a huge danger or was the show exaggerating?

 

Don't tell my wife that- she's way too afraid of those things as it is.

I agree, Hon Daddy Dad- for a trip to NZ/Austrailia, a few months would be ideal. And we may do that after my wife stops being a teacher in two years.

 

Ok some serious suggestions.

Mongolia, Seychelles, India, madagascar, Egypt, Rio, Cannes film festival, Cannes porn festival, Santiago, Buenes aires, Northern lights (Aurora Borealis), Easter Island, St Kitts, dubai, easter island, Cape town, Hong kong, Beijing, or scandanavia..or maybe the ICE HOTEL.

Ok so this is a part of my list but fine feel free.

Haha well if it's getting to be a big problem there I would be too. They're the size of a thumbnail, practically invisible and 1 sting has enough venom to kill 60 people.

 

Crazy Rob: Your wife is teacher, thats nice. Winter or Summer vacations for children heh? Why doesnt she takes a leave of 1-2 months. I dont think the school will mind about that.

Anyway I am going to India the first time in my life, hope it turns out well. Leaving on the 27th of this month.

 

My best tip: Drink bottled water - make sure it is properly sealed.

 

Brasil and Bulgaria both are worthwhile.

 

I've never seen any box jelly fish. They're only in the tropical parts of Australia during certain times of the year. Around November to February I think.

Its to hot to be up those parts at that time of year anyways.

Besides the places where they have the box jelly fish also have salt water crocodiles that have been known to attack beachside campers.
