Oh absolutely. I think that is the most important method to increase directory entry sales. Once I launch, I will do my best to get on all the lists.

But, I must also state that from SERPs, I am hoping to get traffic looking for content, not for buying directory entries. Only if I have healthy quantity of regular surfer traffic will my customers get the maximum benefit of the listing.

So, there are two different kinds of traffic I am targetting: surfer traffic and customer traffic. I am first focussing on building the former. And then creating a compelling reason for the latter :)

Of course, this is all at the plan phase now  I hope to come back to all of you guys and inform you about how this turned out :)

    Thanks :)

You all do realize that Google isn't the only search engine - heck, yahoo is better ranked in alexa than Google. Just get your directories optomised for yahoo if google drops it.

Rather start looking at your projected revenue. What are you going to be selling first of all? Are you on top of the changes that are taking place in the market?

If I was you I would set up two tiers of cats at the very most then start submitting your site to a reputable list of free directories. Select one category that you know something about and start adding quality content slowly. If you feel its a must and you can afford it customise the site to get the look you want and then spend as much time as you can on these sort of forums looking for lists you can add your site to which buyers are going to see and use. They are generally street wise and looking for a good deal. You need to offer them a good deal and to convince them you are still going to be around in three years time.

If this is your first directory and you start off sinking $10k into it the chances are that its not going to float. It will also take you down with it.
Forget it. This is pie in the sky but its also the reason I suggested you select a category you know something about and that you start building it as a niche resource within a general directory. In time once you have establshed yourself and once you have become recognised within the communities your category caters to, you might get the sort of user traffic you are talkng about. Until then concentrate on charging a review fee to webmasters who are looking for back links, for doing just that. But at the same time make sure you keep your hands clean.

It may not have happened. This sounds like another general directory to me, and he will need to spend a good £15'000 on this - shame he hasn't got a specialist idea, then it may work.

I'm nowhere to Godmode in Directories, but the plan is way too expensive for a business that might go down soon.

The thing is, analyze the profits instead the budget only!

First, I must confess to not being a directory God as requested in your intro post. But, I have spent a lot of time and money on directories and have read thousands of posts from other directory owners including some who believe they're Gods.

The most glaring omission from your plan is the MISSION (aka the plan, the business purpose, etc...). Why are you considering starting your directory?

Assuming the hope is to profit then there are several ways to do so, but I missed what your plan was.

All in all I'd say you appear to be business-savvy and willing to invest a healthy amount into your directory, so I believe you can build a reputable and potentially popular directory that can earn a little money every month. But, I would only recommend doing this if you have other, much stronger, sources of income.

If you go forward with your plan be sure to let us know so we can watch over it's growth as any God worth his weight would!

    Best,

    Mauiman
