How important is the age of the domain?

I realize no one can answer this question except for Google but does anyone have a general idea of how much weight this factor carries in rankings?

I can't give you anything mathematical, but I can vouch for its importance. I have a domain that's about 7 years old, with very few backlinks. Yet it maintains PR4 and #1 SERPs in Google for all related terms

I would say its quite a big factor, depending how the the site has been indexed in G, definately effects rankings.

 

Thanks for the info on the age of the domain. Unfortunately, mine is only a year old because I wasn't happy with my former business domain name (wish I would have known then about the Google weighting factor on age of domain then) and changed it.

What confuses me is that I've had a PR4 for months and months and have been working on my link building a lot over the past month and today when I checked my PR, it's a 3. What gives?

It has become one of the major factors. It is certainly more important than PR. But if you buy an old domain, trying to get the benefit, it may not work unless you bought it quickly and start building with the similar theme that the former owner had.

Many people try to use old domains, thinking they get domain age benefit, but they only fail to do it.

 

Even sites that aren't 5-7 years old perform much better in Google. I can put two sites with the same amount of content up on one new domain and one that is a year or two old. The older one will always rank better giving the same type of backlinks etc.

Yes, age of domain is a great factor, I have a domain name abt one year old. I have not much traffic on this site nor its full of contents, but it has PR 4. So i think age of domain really matters. Though not sure how

 

I think Google considers older domains more credible. As a newer domain could be here one day & gone the next.

 

thats why as opposed to creating a new site, it's better to just stick to your existing site especially if it's already a pretty old one, since google factors in a domain's age too.

Google's trust rank looks at various factors including domain age to determine weather a page is trust worth or not. This will affect page rank, number of suplimental results, sandbox amoung other issues. Google is suspicious of new sites incase they are spammy . If your site is fairly new try getting some high quality relevant links to your site.

our domain has been active for around 5 or 6 years and has top rankings for one set of keywords and some fairly respectable rankings for another group of keywords. there arent a gr8 deal of backlinks.

Yes, domain is a very important factor for SEO.
However, different search engines have different parameters for the age of the site or domain. Like, Google is much concerned about age than Yahoo! & MSN.
MSN is not much concerned for the age factor. so, if your site is new then the chances of getting ranked in MSN are higher.

richub4u you are right, I also have noticed that google gives much stress on Domain age, msn and yahoo are not much curious about it.

 

yes google also depends on site age..

 

I suppose the age of a domain gives an appearance of site longetivity to the search engines and thus benefits the site in the search engine rankings.
