If your domain registrar is Yahoo, this message is for you.

Yahoo has recently increased domain renewal fees from $9.95/year to an outrageous $34.95/year. This applies to all domain holders, new and old. I thought you should be told since yahoo did not even care to notify me. If you have set your account to auto renewal you will find your credit card charged $34.95, of course, without any warning.

I now want to transfer my domain. Who will pay 5 to 6 times more? crap yahoo. I need some help

You did not get a notification e-mail a couple of months back?

There have been quite a few people transferring to Godaddy, Namecheap, Name
    and places such as those.
Transfer fees for those three vary between $6 and $8, I believe, which includes one more year of registration.
Some require coupons and some do not.

Godaddy transfers, for my .net anyway, didn't cost me anything extra, just at least one year of registration. (which you have to pay anyway) I got 2 years at the transfer for $14. Much better than yahoo's $34.99 for a year.

Yahoo is insane, why would they raise the price 2.5x? Maybe they just want to get out of the domain business.

Most people that use Yahoo are new to web hosting/domains/websites. They are going with Yahoo because of the brand recognition. Yahoo sees this and is trying to take advantage of their users unfamiliarity because most serious website owners will not continue paying those outrageous fees. Also, remember when Yahoo was offering $1.99? That market strategy has come full circle. It's a pain in the ass to transfer out of Yahoo (some Australian domain company is actually the registrar) and Yahoo is full aware that if people wait to renew until the domain is expiring they might have to go ahead and renew at $35 if the domain/website are worth that much - which they probably are one way or the other.

I sold a domain for $5 from Yahoo and I probably worked literally 2 hours (over a span of days) to get that domain over. Worst $5 I ever made.

I bought the domain because of the $1.99 offer. The earlier renewal fee of $9.95 was alright for me because it was just $3 more than godaddy which is acceptable. Besides, yahoo's nameserver is damn fast. I could change my dns records and it updates in 15 minutes flat, compared to godaddy which takes some 20-30 hours. And I hate godaddy's control panel. But no choice now.

The price of domain renewals for Yahoo is same with register.com, which both of them are over-charge. Just transfer to others company such as:

    Godaddy.com - $7.15 ( With coupon : OYH3 ) *Limited to .com ONLY
    Mydomain.com - $6.91 ( With coupon : HTMLI.INFO ) *15% off coupon, Applicable for any order
    Namecheap.com - $8.41 ( With coupon : summerends ) *$1 off coupon, Not Applicable for Renewals
    Triple.com - $9.99
Name.com - $6.00, no coupon and renewals rate at $8

Choose a domain registrar that always satisfy your need are always important.
