Has your directory paid off for you? After all those hours you put into it,..was it worth it in the end? Please vote and say why either way. Thanks -Tim
Well not just thinking financially but in other ways i have gained much from running directories, ive learned more about SEO, they have resulted in ideas for other completely different websites basically through the whole experience. I have learned to appreciate the work that a directory owner has to do in order to keep theirs in order. The responsibility is good, it provides experience through learning how to cope with the backend and learning the correct way to deal with the online public, its satisfying and on going. So hopefully your not just referring to $$$
Hours is too small a unit of time - let's start with weeks, maybe even months Oh, and to answer your question, I'd second pipes' comments - absolutely, totally worth every single moment. But then I always was a long-haul person & the mantra is 'if it's worth doing, it's worth doing well'.
Both yes and no. Theres been some good points - $xx,xxx and some bad points (remember that Sunday in september?)

Wow, 45 pages long...haven't read that one. Interesting to go back and see what the thoughts were 'back then'...
My niche directories have absolutely given more back to me than the work I have put into them. I'm a big hot sauce junky and since starting my directory I have been able to locate and catalog more types of sauces and other spicy foods than I would have the time for myself. This was really my initial intent and I hope it has done the same for other folks who have the same tastes as I do.. The great thing about a directory like mine is that not only can you find a specific subject, you can tell other hot sauce fools what you think about a particular sauce and even write a review about it. My directory has every advantage to the user not to mention myself. Is it worth it?
I am a hot sauce guy too But I am also a Rod_Purnell follower have been for years hard working experienced, innovative guy And back on subject You get back in life what you put in No Effort, No Return, No Value Lots of Effort = Lots of Returns Its that simple
I voted for 'Yes, it's more than paid off' reason being, I've gained so much knowledge on many aspects such as seo, coding, client relationships etc etc, and more importantly, have made many friendships/associations with some really unique individuals.
I voted yes, i guess, because, I am not certain of the benefits, yet so much learned , and an the chapter , really is only just begining. In 2007 , I really couldn't identify a valid path to pursue , now in 2008 at least a lot of dud paths appear to be withering away, leaving behind,,,, treasure, or more duds
I voted for more than paid off When I first started a directory I did n't know about PHP,SQL and even other things But now I know lot about this .... Also the challenges you face in running a directory and making both ends meet(in Web) gives you some good experience...
