What's the idea of getting bad reputation when giving it?

So I was just called an asshole in a post of mine so I gave bad rep and the user just gave me bad rep for giving it. Where is the fairness in this system?

I mean I gave bad rep twice since I have been here at Digital Point and both times they sent it back my way when they were the ones that deserved it. Even if they wanted to give me bad rep they should do it because I did it they should do it for the posting reasons. As you can see I have 2 bad rep inputs that I don't deserve I gave these idiots bad rep for foul language and etc...

If someone called you an asshole you should have just reported it , as direct abuse isn't allowed.

If you give negative rep to anyone it 'costs' you one point to do so. No-one is throwing it back - it's all automated.

rep abuse is mostly about being caught in a rep gang or signing reps in someone elses name to start a rep war. then you get an instant and permanent ban.

racist comments in reps are also followed up and bans given.

calling someone a "tool" in a rep comment, aint gonna get you anything but an infraction for starting a thread to complain about someone calling you a "tool"

starting a thread about it, proves the comment was correct

I thought he was under the impression that red-repping someone had resulted in it being 'thrown back at him' by the person he had red-repped (rather than the system), NOT that he was complaining because someone called him a tool. Tools are useful. ;)

i was giving examples of rep abuse and posting threads about complaining about them, like it states in the sticky, "do not start threads about rep"

its not that you deserved it, its the cost of giving someone red rep.

it will always cost you -1 rep every time you give out a negative.

even when you reach the point of your rep being worth 10 points when you give it, when you take it, it will still cost you a point.

Yes when you click the I disapprove box it tells you in red letters that it will cost you -1 point to do it.

The whole "Cost" of giving a red reputation is -1 rule has lost its relevance once we got members with over 1k reputation points and we all know it.

Losing 1 point (lol) obviously won't stop someone with 2500 rep points from redrepping anybody........well at least not me..

I dunno. It stopped a lot of the mob repping that was going on and calmed down the red-rep-frenzy. Doesn't happen so much these days. Obviously people still get red-repped but one would like to think that the people with the big rep scores aren't quite so trigger happy as the average joe (unless someone says Scotland isn't a country in which case they deserve being red-repped) ;)
