Just saw this tread started by Dave E and when I checked I saw Dmoz is not ranking for it's own name too. I highly doubt Google would penalize their own directory for not following webmaster guidelines and I highly doubt they were buying links. Now, with all the respect for Mr.Rand's theory, I would like to hear what he has to say about this. I would say something is just wrong with Google at the moment, but curious to know what do you guys think.
The only reason I can find is all these directories are passing too much page rank which is affecting Google in a very big way!
Great to know that Dmoz is also gone.. i always wanted this to happen.. But i think this all will be reverted back, as ODP is their own project and so they would surely get it back i hope!
Bottom line - If they are penalized, I don't think dmoz cares one way or the other. It's not likely to affect their model at all. I'm sure the submissions will continue as usual.
They (DMOZ, the organization) is not losing money. But they, the editors, will certainly take a big hit money-wise. It will be interesting, if Google really penalizes DMOZ, how many editors all of a sudden stop being active editors.
My opinion on this? I'd say two things - one, if they are penalized, it probably means that whatever caught that large group of directories a couple weeks ago was algorithmic and appears to have caught DMOZ too. Two - good riddance. I don't personally find the site particularly valuable, and I've never liked having to deal with the corruption and self-importance of the DMOZ editors. However, my guess is that, as others have said above, this is probably temporary - I still see DMOZ ranking for lots of longer tail queries (unlike many of the other penalized directories), and I suspect Google won't keep them penalized for their brand names for long. Not shedding any tears though
wow, it really is true...just searched for "dmoz" and "dmoz.org" and they don't even appear! Typical, since I just got added to dmoz. Murphy's law once again.
Well its not like DMOZ editors are going and buying PR7-8-9 links so.... I could only take a stab in the dark and say that they may have had a few high PR "reciprocal links" which may have caused this effect and was caught in the new filter. I agree as i dont much care for DMOZ but some of those editors are indeed very good at what they do and not all are corrupt but the few tarnish the DMOZ image. thx malcolm
Next bans... Yahoo directory Google Directory In fact i think they might ban all addresses started by http://
I doubt it. As long as there are webmasters willing to pay to have their website included, there will always be corrupt editors.
