Well there are places besides dmoz where they can practice what they love.

There Joeant plus they can start their own.

Ok so is that the criteria which dmoz looks for when recruiting editors.

People which will basically build the dmoz directory for no compensation, but on the contrary show no indication of doing anything for themselves.

What if that editor decides in the future and says, let me start my own directory as well, I've already got the experience, takes only 5 mins to start a directory.

Now he has his own directory as well, so then is he shown the door?

If your talking about being driven by a community there as sooooooo many bigger and better communities out there which are free to join.

Look at DP, it's a great community, even dmoz people hang out over here. Look at the number of members this community has.

It's much bigger then the dmoz community will ever be.

Plus, nobody is gonna kick you out of this community.

So you don't really have to be an editor to be part of a community?

Now for those looking for those extra dollars could be a good incentive to edit for dmoz.

OK, I'll give you an answer as to why it's not common for DMOZ editors to have their own directories when you give us the reasoning as to why you do not want to be listed in DMOZ and are not an Editor there yourself.

The reason I don't want to be listed in dmoz is because I don't think it really deserves to hold a quality site like mine.

It's best to keep listing the level of sites which it has been doing.

We are doing well and will continue to do so on our own, we nor do I think any site owner needs or is at the mercy of dmoz to list their site.

If you have a quality site, you will get visitors, period.

Then why is it so hard to reverse the context of your answer for a DMOZ editor?

DMOZ, to most editors, is the biggest and the best and no puny second rate directory can or could compare...so why bother even attempting it? Yeah, it takes 5 minutes to set up but it'll take at least 5 years to manually fill it! So why even bother when there is such a wonderful high quality one which they already have access?

If you have a quality site, you will get visitors, period.

Yea, and how many visitors come to dmoz?

A very very small percentage actually come there to look for resources.

95% of the visitors dmoz has is from people trying to submit their site, see if their site is listed, or see which of their competitors are listed.

So basically it is the webmasters who are visiting your dmoz just checking up on their site.

So tell me where is the quality there?

Are you trying to tell me that people are visiting your directories to research things? At least Webmasters are talking about the ODP... and that WOULD be the quality.

Yes they do visit my directory, and the number of searches in my directory are rising on an astronomical rate.

Basically because of the search feature we have and it is not available on any other directory.

Yea, but from what I understand, dmoz is not made for the webmaster. It is made for the surfer, the browser looking for unique content.

Where is that surfer, that browser for which you've created dmoz from the work of all these editors?

Ask around you, people which are not webmasters

How many even know what dmoz is.

I actually surveyed 50 people, from many walks of life.

Not one of them knew what dmoz was.

They knew Google, Yahoo & MSn.

It seems you are the bitter one and still upset about removing the pedophile and child porn sites. ;)

There has already been a discussion about DMOZ copyright and it is very clear to any intelligent person that DMOZ has no valid copyright. Even Brizzie (one eye) finally had to admit to it and orlady just put her tails between her legs and ran away. ;)

    DMOZ has no copyright.

Let me add to my post.

Wikepedia which is a much much newer project then dmoz is 100s of times more useful to the actual surfer.

I mean people actually go there to find and look for information.

    Can you deny this fact?

Where does dmoz rate to wikepedia or about.com?

As a directory wiki can never compare to the quality of DMOZ, neither can About. As a search engine how do about.com & Wiki compare to Google? As an apple how does that compare to an orange?

Look on the bright side at lest you know the reason unlike many others... ;)

For health my best I advice would be cooked fish with glass of red wine for lunch and žganci or polenta for dinner - one of my relatives is 86+ and she could probably still do some editing if she had PC. :D

Why a friend should ask you to censor yourself?

May be they were worried that if you open a directory, you will be competing with their sales of links in DMOZ. ;)

Buy a DMOZ link from "senior" editors.

I think the reason they let you go was your directory. Heck you can go to JoeAnt today and start editing tomorrow if you like.

They got that anthill and whatever, but if you like editing, you can do it at JoeAnt.

This is hogwash, we all know it.

That Compostannie's post stating that dmoz did not like it when she opened her own directory had more actuality to it.

Basically dmoz run by AOL who tried to change the internet and get people to type in keywords rather then urls thought they could monopolize it.

Looks like their the minority now.

DMOZ is right in its footsteps mainly because of that AOL mismanagement.

We're talking about how useful a project is or how many genuine visitors a project really attracts.

Dmoz doesn't have any genuine visitors or browsers looking for information there.

Wikipedia on the other hand has millions of visitors looking for resources there.

Dmoz basically has webmaster traffic trying to submit their site there.

Dmoz is around 9 or 10 years old, wikipedia I think maybe 3.

In it's short existence it has proved to be a much more valuable resource then dmoz will ever be in it's entirety.

So what is the point in editing for a place with such problems. There are so many other projects out there as well.

And people looking for the definitions of words are not looking in encyclopedias...

Of course no one uses DMOZ for "resources" that's not what it's there for...and of course people are using WIKI for reference, that's what it was created for.

People ARE using DMOZ as a directory though.... after all, that IS what it is.

No there not people are NOT using dmoz as a directory. It's mainly webmasters which are browsing or traversing those categories.

You might have people using your search but then there is also Yahoo search which pulls results from its directory along with web results.

Business.com, yes people are using that directory as a directory and business search.

Ali Baba, yes people are using it.

manufacturers.com.tw yes people are using it.

DMOZ no, nobody is using it as a directory. Mainly webmasters pertaining to business relating to their site.

sure they are but dmoz according to what it's proscribed as provides no services to the webmaster.

It's basically there to serve the browser, the one trying to find sites, not the one trying to submit their site.

There's a big difference there my friend.

but then there is a big conflict of usage cause the browser or surfer which dmoz is collecting sites for doesn't even know what dmoz is.

Actually, I'm in the final stages of programming my directoryjunction.com

I will submit this thing to yahoo.com and business.com and give an analysis of how much traffic I have received from those sites.

People who's sites are listed in dmoz, don't really boast any big traffic boosts because of being listed in dmoz. It's mainly the webmasters which want that free link with some pagerank to it.

As for me, my motive is and has always been different.

The average user has no clue what a directory is... the average user does not even have a clue what the yahoo directory is, or even what business.com is. The end user for DMOZ is the webmaster, the end user for ANY directory is the webmaster.

but then, it seems you should likely take this over to your other thread.

How many people honestly use dmoz to surf for resources

As that is where this line of posts really belong.

To get this thread back on topic, I think it would likely be more rewarding for DMOZ editors if they never heard of Digital Point... after all we are nothing but a bunch of trolls and miscreants out to take them all down *evil grin*

Though, I found satisfaction in getting parts of my category back in working order. I'd work for a a different directory, but then, there would be no fun in that, those are webmaster tools, whereas DMOZ is for the end user ;)
