I was just wondering? Lets be honest. Over the past 10 years, I honestly have never used dmoz to surf or search for resources. On the contrary even though, I very rarely surf for resources on Yahoo directory, but I very much do frequently use Yahoo Search which lists directory resources as well. How many people use dmoz to surf or search resources? How many people use Yahoo to surf or search resources?
Neither DMOZ or Yahoo are Search Engines. I have used the ODP directory to find many related sites to my nich. I find that it's an excellent way to find competing sources so I can then either get links from them, or find out where they have links. With the slow rate of cleaning that DMOZ has it should be a resource for all aspiring webmasters. Though, to be honest, I now use ALEXA as it's search interface to the directory is far superior to the crappy think DMOZ uses. And yes, it's the best directory for my nich, as very few of my competitors will pay for directory submissions, and very few of the other free ones out there are all that into what I like.
Only time I visited DMOZ was to waste my time submitting a site. When searching for resources I just use Google.
Nobody (TM) should use ODP/dmoz.org directly - it's a boring site (visually/technically) and often slow. It's not even a goal that anyone should use dmoz.org ... The interesting question is how many sites use ODP data. http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Searching/Directories/Open_Directory_Project/Sites_Using_ODP_Data/ lists only the sites using ODP data while following the license conditions - there are probably many more sites/directories. How important these directories are for your site, is another question, and these directory listings won't do much for your PR ...
People visit Dmoz, it is in Alexa's top 500 most visited sites online # 419 http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?url=http://dmoz.org
lol I'd be willing to bet that number is bloated due to webmasters upping their alexa rank and fretting over whether or not they are listed. Not to mention the bias nature between Alexa & Dmoz
Actually I was wondering if people could just answer my question. How many people go to dmoz for resources? How many people go to yahoo for resources?
I only go to dmoz for checking the category out when someone asks for review or status of their site in particular directory on " dmoz resources "
The answer is NO. No one visits DMOZ to Surf or Search Research... that is why they are #419 in ALEXA. People just visit it to flip pages so they can collect screenshots of the little green lizard. (did you know there are over 100!) No one uses the Yahoo Directory either. That's why it costs so much be to be listed.
