The title says it all: is it really true that .orgs are more trusted than .coms by the search engines??! And just for the record, it was a member DoA that wrote that (in particular he wrote, quoting: "there is an argument that .org domains are more trusted by the SE's") in the A really annoying situation with my two websites thread here on DP forum. thanks, tayiper
hmm..i dont think so..i guess it would still depend on the content of the site..but if thats the deal, thats fine with me,, i have .orgs with me..
Nope, all (well, all decent search engines) and impartial to most of the TLD's (except obviously .edu and .gov etc) dot com is just as trusted
I'm certain that it doesn't matter. The reason many .edu's and .gov's have authority is that they are pointed to by other authority sites. They were probably given the 'authority' by Sergei and that other guy probably decided upon, early on when they created the algorithm. I'm sure they update the authority list every so often. Look at Adison.edu and the like and you'll notice that they don't have much PR.
Yes, .edu and .gov are given more preference because you can't just buy them willy-nilly. You have to be an educational or government official, and you site will be monitored. Google and other Search Engines like these because they KNOW that the content can be trusted.
No. Org is not preferred by search engines and neither is edu and gov. edu and gov sites does however often have many very trusted links pointing to them maaking them very trusted but a .com, org or even info would be just as trusted and do just as well if they had the same links. Matt Cutts have commented on this and confirmed that all domains including .edu and .gov are treated equally.
This is true now, however Adison.edu and probably a few others were grandfathered in back in 2001. Adison.edu is not an educational facility. It's owned by (I can't remember his name) someone in Colorado, I think. I would say the major research universities (Harvard, Yale, UCLA, etc), search engines (Yahoo), publications (the BBC, Washington Post, etc), and government sites (Whitehouse.gov, not to be mistaken with Whitehouse.com!) were given authority by the Google folks.
If all domains are treated equally then .info should be same level as .com too right? I've heard that .info is lower in their eyes as it's mostly used for scraper sites.
I have a backlink to my site from an Ivy League .edu website. It still returns a PR4, even though it is listed three clicks below the home page. That to me is a high-quality link, not easily matched by the .coms and .orgs.
Thanks for this enlightening thread. I was just reading up about something like this which Matt Cutt said. Now this clarifies everything. Thanks guys.
