Jeff, i agree that you need to tread on this idea carefully You have immence following in the webmaster community and if you go wrong, it can hurt someone big time Just my 2c
Great move Jeff. I think its a great way to do a clean up of directory business. It may not change the mentality of current victims but it would certainly help those who may be thinking to do a similar act. I am also working on a similar thing with my "Hall of shame" but I will not be listing only directories there.
Some people may become offended by an individual who see's themself as a self appointed Judge, also as many people are pointing out, it is something that requires careful treading. Sometimes the outcasts can form together to attack, and can cause some temporary but serious damage in many ways. Before i even setup my first directory i took all of these things into account, i sometimes think how offline business works, before attempting to do something online. It can seem very different and a lot more serious than first thought. Not my 2 cents, because im British, my 2 pennies you could say.
Sounds to be a GREAT news for me. I know few directories that must be included in it. Will Shoot an email shortly.
It's very good to see you do this, Jeff! And about your first choice: It's a very good choice! Copycatting and stealing ideas has become far too accepted here on DP and especially around directory people.
I understand the motivations for making such a list but I don't think its a good idea. Seems too much like a big fish picking on little fish, even if this is not intentional. Some directory owners make mistakes, how can we distinguish an innocent mistake from a dishonest action? Also, the list shouldn't begin with just 2 directories because alot of people are going to blog about the list and the 2 sites will get most of negative publicity, when in reality we all know there are alot more sites doing bad things too. I think the list should be taken down until you have at least 10 sites that have been blacklisted by more than 1 individual experiance.
I think Jeff know's what he's doing and I'm also certain he gives the site or individual in question the opportunity to discuss the problem. I like the idea, and also think that reputable directory owners need to work together behind the scenes to identify copycats, and other harmful or less than honest practices in the directory industry. Good on ya Jeff! I can see you are exercising good restraint or the list would be a lot more than 2 sites. Appreciate what you are doing.
I can understand how some of you view this as bullying, but I don't see it as that. I think it's time for directory owners to weed out those giving everyone a bad reputation.
LOL....I almost forgot about that one....that was widespread... I hope my directory never makes that list. Col
You are absolutely right. But if you have seen the 2 'DP Threads" listed here. You can see they are not among "innocent mistake" section.
The idea is NOT Bad. And yes I too agree with the argument that you should have more solid reasons to blacklist someone (not only DP). BTW, Name infringement is BAD idea. BUT I am not sure on the basis of name infringement one should be blacklisted. For Directories, blacklist should have names which are spammy, and a bad thing to internet. I may be wrong.
I think some people are getting wrong impressions here. Jeff is not listing it for anybody--but for himself. He is not acting as the Bully of the industry -- he is just listing all those directories he thinks are not following ethical business in his own way. And he says he would not submit to those directories. It is purely his personal. I reckon all are free to follow his list or not to follow. I'll definitely follow it and so too many others
There are only two on the list, I think if Jeff and whomever he consults with deem them blacklisted for reasons mentioned in the post so be it. I JUST HOPE THOSE LINKS ARE NOFOLLOW!
very nice idea, there was need of such thread badly. I will keep an eye for sure and will let you know
