Keywords & SERP: density vs quantity

Let's venture some educated guesses as to which is more important for SERP: the number of times a keyword appears or the density of the keyword with relevance to all other words on the page.

Based on my observations of sites in my niche, without factoring in PR, backlinks, and age, the ones that tend to get higher organic rankings are the ones that have a very high count of keywords regardless of density.

Would like to hear others' experience.

Here is a post about keyword density and what works. It even has links to google and how to make adsense show ads you want on site.

    Hello,

On Google I'm using around 2 to 3.50%, but you need to see around your top ten competitors :)

Forget about Keyword density. In does not play a role in optimisation for search engine like Google.

I can't agree...it must be relevant, even to Google. Maybe not as important as other factors but still in my opinion it is one of the factors in on-site SEO

Latent Semantic is over-rated (as far as this post goes). Keyword Density is still important. Yes, you need to mention related words in your content, but you also need to mention your keyword.

I have ranked, and still rank, for highly competitive terms and focus on keyword density, and naturally write content around it.

Next point for this thread: Comparing your site to your competitors doesn't really work. Think about it. If Edison compared how to get his light source from his neighbor, we'd all still be using candles.

Point is, just because your competitor is ranking well, doesn't mean they have got the best method. If the competition isn't fierce for that keyword, copying what your competitor is doing may only make you as mediocre as him.
