I don't know how they found it. I'm not Google. But, if I had that information, I'm sure it would be worth something. :D
My best guess is that WHOIS records play some role but that is a complete guess on my part.

I'm 100% certain that there was a link to the site, be it on a forum, blog, website, public referrer stats or if the domain was previously registered.

MattUK - somewhere much earlier in this thread several people mentioned they launched sites in December and they got PR so the snapshot likely happened in December.

I have started another thread (here) to try and figure out the exact date. Once the update is over we should be able to figure out the snapshot date (lots of sites available to calculate). So link building before December should have an impact just not sure what the cut off day in December will be.

I had a feeling that you would say something like that. :)

What can I tell ya? I've seen evidence that contradicts that more than once.

Thanks for that info, dbinto. I had been link building from October to late December. It would be nice to know that maybe 80% of that will be reflected in this update. :)

I'm not seeing any movement on any of my sites either, maldives.

It could be anything IMO. PR is allocated to various pages individually based on the PR of the page where the links are placed.

I didn't get any movements on my sites on the last update. So if I don't get any updates this time I don't know what im doing wrong. They all have predicted PR E.g. 3-5, 0-4, 0-3 but im still not seeing anything - think i'll code a script to check my PR and ring an alarm when they change, then I can go into hibernation until something happens! :p

Well the only way to be sure if links added in the last 1-3 months will count is to just sit and wait for the PR update to finish.... Then if we are out of luck just continue to focus on more link building before the next PR update.

PR prediction will certainly lead you to nothing. Don't believe on it. Keep doing the link building, never depend on PR prediction tool.

That doesn't really tally with what I've been seeing, my best guess is late October, though that's based around one site, though like you say more data is needed.

One problem with people saying a site is 'launced' is that a site launch doesn't always mean that's when Google first discovered the domain or when the linkbuilding started.

    I have to diagree

The only sure way to know anything about links without anything other than speculation is to have been employed by the search engine of your choice as an engineer working on their algorithm

Again unless selling links PR Does not matter all that much.

I gave up on those PR prediction tools a long time ago. They kept getting my hopes up and then pulling the rug out at PR update time. :)
