I’m trying to build some links from social bookmarking sites. Here’s what did, 1)Tag all the major directories/entries of my site on del.icio.us., the most efficient way for bookmarking. It took me around 3 hours to bookmark all my 86 directories with notes and tags description. 2)Export all the bookmarks to my local computer. In del.icio.us Setting---Export/Backup menu, it’s easy to export all the bookmarks to a local bookmark.htm file. All tags are also exported with the bookmark notes. 3)Then I tried a lot of other social bookmarkting sites, checking whether bookmark -import supported or not. And I get a list of sites which support html bookmark importing. http://buddymarks.com http://www.spurl.net http://blogmarks.net http://www.blinklist.com/ http://www.shadows.com/ http://www.connectedy.com http://www.furl.net http://myweb.yahoo.com/ There should be more. I found those just in a short period of time. Sometimes you could import all bookmarks directly from del.icio.us, if you’d give your del.icio.us password, which is very embarrassing though. 4)Upload my bookmark.htm file to all of them. Some can keep all the tags, some can’t. Anyway, I got hundreds of backlinks from those social websites now. Will those links benefit my website? I’m not sure. Maybe you could take a try this way to check the result. Maybe it can’t bring much traffic and it won’t change the PR. But when search engines crawl hundreds of links to your site, won’t it count for something? Or at least, as the bookmarks reflects the structure of the whole site, will it make search engine to index the site more efficiently? If hundreds not enough, how about thousands? Will thousands of backlinks from bookmarking sites count? If you think it’s useful, we could take a try. Let’s bulk import bookmarks from each other’s site. You could download my bookmark file, and upload it to your social website accounts. Let me know after you do this, and I’ll upload your bookmark file in return. It’s simple and easy. Download my bookmark file as attached, or Get my bookmark file: http://www.hotcoding.com/hotcodingbookmark.zip
All of these bookmarking sites require registration, but the ones you have listed accept the "import" bookmarks file from del.icio.us?
Yes, first you need to register a account. All listed sites accept .htm bookmarks files. You could generate the .htm bookmark file from del.icio.us.
Hi sz2006. I'm interested in joining this experiment, so I've imported all of your links into my del.icio.us/cryogenius account. I've attached my links for you to add to your account. I've got a myweb.yahoo.com account, which I'll also be using (when I get round to it). Anyone else interested? Cryo. PS: Annoyingly, on del.icio.us, you have to manually share each imported link.
Here is my zip file, now let's see where this takes us. BTW I have dloaded both zips here and started the process of importing and creating accounts on the above listed bookmarking sites.
Thanks SFOD - I'm uploading your links now. TIP: I give each bulk upload a unique tag (in addition to the original ones). So, imported1 has the links from sz2006, and imported2 has the links from SFOD_S233. Also, if you want Search Engines to spider your del.icio.us account, make sure it is linked from somewhere (e.g. here).
SFOD - that's a lot of links you attached, by the way... the idea was to only share the links we wanted to promote, not all of the ones in our del.icio.us account. Can other people wanting to contribute please remember to edit their links before sharing them... thanks.
I'm adding all of yours. And I found www.blogmarks.net can bring nice traffic, as it can import all tags. You'll find your tags are easy to be searched there.
Thanks for the tip, sz2006 - I've created an account and imported all my (and your) bookmarks from del.icio.us. If you would like to import my bookmarks into your blogmarks account, they can be found here. I've started another thread with a similar idea in mind: del.icio.us reciprocal bookmark exchange... Cheers, Cryo.
In terms of linkbuilding, many social bookmarking sites use the "nofollow" tag or use redirects so it is not that great for link building. Better for traffic but not so much for link juice. Here is a screenshot from del.icio.us.
If you're trying to get your site indexed by search engines, it's still worth while. Google and Yahoo will still 'follow' those links, and index the pages they point to, as well as count them as backlinks. "nofollow" only means "don't pass PageRank/TrustRank". Also, del.icio.us shows different robots.txt and robots meta tag to those two search engines... you can find tons of del.icio.us pages which have been indexed and cached. Cryo. PS: Besides, the point of this exercise is to increase visibility within social bookmarking sites, and to get more traffic direct from them.
I totally agree. I just wanted to make it clear for those that are looking to get links from social bookmarking sites for the explicit purpose of getting links for PR or ranking purposes.
Most people's social bookmark page are useless because it is either empty (just his own link) or spammy (tag exchange). Also, there is no link point to that page. I 've just start a experiment by adding link to my social bookmark page, let see if it helps
