I am very new to joomla. have a domain and hosting account. Planning to make a SEO friendly site.Content is ready. But i need to set the urls for search engines.

I searched in google did the following things

    global configuration > SEO Settings

Search Engine Friendly URLs : Yes

    Use Apache mod_rewrite : No

    Add suffix to URLs :No

After that i see my links changes according to links. that's good. But i see that in some tutorial i need to set

    Use Apache mod_rewrite :yes

and install a plug inn sef404 to tale more control on my links. I saw you-tube video about that. it is easy. but it is not free. i don't want to buy. so my question :

    Is it really important?
if yes is the any free copy?

    Thanks

If godaddy uses cpanel, you should probably be able to do it in the file manager in the cpanel program.

    godaddy does NOT use cpanel.

    yes you can rename it.

i said in the other thread. log into godaddy. In the file manager (after clicking on the hosting) goto the second across tab and click the middle down dropdown option (file manager), then you will see the root file trees for the joomla install. Pick the one that matches the name of your joomla, (you gave it a name when you installed). then navigate to where that file is, I am guessing somewhere like admin folder or root directory. click or select, then look for the icon above the selected directory display. it's like Xtree gold (which nobody remembers). call godaddy tech this is a simple question they will tell you.

I put the underline there in the quote. If you can not change a simple filename in your webhosting I would go ahead and change it. The htaccess file is in the root folder.

SEF patch for Joomla 1.520 Stable release is free of charge so just download & install to improve SEO. in here ( /public_html ) u can see htaccess file. joomla installation creates htaccess file so check ur document root.

It depends on the components your are using for joomla. for example if you are not using any components, like forums, social networking, download managers virtual mart etc, i think you dont need to buy sh404sef component for joomla, you can simple enable the default sef in joomla configurations. but if you want to use the above said components, you may need it.

You do not need to write it. Have a friend send you theirs from their ( similar built ) site. If you can not do that, download Joomla, decompress the file, and upload the htaccess.txt to your host. You will still have to rename it once you get it on your host.

Joomla Core should solve this. Mod_Rewrite must be on though, as thats the script that matches old and new friendly URLs
