Ok, so you guys have all heard of digg, shoutwire, etc.... It seems like the next big thing is stumble upon. Also see this previous DP Forum: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=74469 So, just like we've started threads agreeing to "digg" each other... The best way sites get traffic from stumbleupon is when those with the toolbar installed give sites a positive vote, those sites then get shown to more and more stumbleupon users...if you're not familiar visit stumbleupon.com NOW ITS TIME TO "STUMBLEUPON" EACH OTHER, DON'T FORGET: ITS NOT ENOUGH TO JUST VISIT THE SITE WITH THE TOOLBAR...YOU MUST GIVE THE SITE A POSITIVE VOTE.... Anyways, I'm ready folks... my site is CompanyClick.com Business Networking Your stumbleupons and thumbs up ratings with the toolbar are greatly appreciated and I will do the same for you. And let's all do the same for each other! Thanks! -Dimitry
Such friendliness will make those community site results bad, because we will be voting even if the site is not worth that, so people wan't be using those things.
I don't think this will go over that well since this involves installing software whereas digg does not. I'd be happy to join and participate if it looks like this gets a large following.
You're just fooling yourself if you ask me using an approach that you shouldn't be proud of. Trust me, I've been there and had some major digg effect in 2005 and none of it was achieved by cheating, people actually liked the article. The article was so good that it was automatically copied by readers to other large sites that use the same concept like stumbleupon, i-am-bored, coolsiteoftheday, link, flabber, ebaumsword, del.icio.us, etc. At some point I made like $450 in one day, having 42,000 people visiting when I normally had 2,000. All was like a big avalanche effect, something you can't achieve with an article that simple sucks. Because of this I made not only good money over a long period of time, but it also boosted my link popularity immensely and saw Google traffic increase with over 500% and it's still increasing, because I continue to write descent stuff. What you get is only short-term success and in my eyes it's taking your attention away from things that are much more important.
Darlin' where have you been? I can't remember when I tried stumbleupon but it must have been around 2000. Kudos to them for sticking it out so long, but the next big thing. I don't think so. I had a request recently for help with a "surprise me" script for a directory. I helped, but it's lame. Who has the time and energy to wade through random sites? If I'm looking for stuff I search or use a reputable directory - and a site has 2 or 3 sentences to win me over or I'm off. I'd be very concerned if the $450 was from advertising - are people clicking for the wrong reasons. But looking at your site (which took a while to load) you don't have advertising so presumably you are able to convert people into signing up. I just couldn't work out what they're signing up for.
I don't see why this is not being supported, just change the "must thumbs up" to do it is you like the page. This is a community is it not? why is supporting others here a bad thing?
Mate, the last time this type of thing happened was when people here were "Digging" each others sites. Long story short, they all had their accounts banned and probably may have had their sites blacklisted from Digg (my guess here). Check this link for more details: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=105564 Why the heck would anyone in their right mind want to do this for another site. Being community minded is one thing, being an idiot is another. Why should I give a thumbs up to sites that may be crappy just because they are sites owned by a Dp member?
Exactly. The problem is that nowadays a lot of people don't know what the word 'moral' means. The other thing is that there are a lot of people out there who are either too stupid or too lazy to achieve descent results. I also wonder whether they know what the word 'selfrespect' means...
dimz793, I could care less about the integrity of Stumbleupon as I never use it but I do think you're barking up the wrong tree. People that use stumbleupon aren't looking for sites like yours, hence the usefullness of getting your site popular isn't worth the energy. As for stumbleupon...meh. I've had some really cool and popular stuff sweep the net and yet the biggest boost in traffic from stumbleupon was 250 uniques in a day.
Mmm... seems to me that what you had on Stumbleupon wasn't all that popular. Otherwise explain to me why I still get 40 people from Stumbleupon every day for something that appeared on Stumbleupon... cough, cough... over one year ago. I spare you the exact numbers just after it was featured... but it was in the tens of thousands. Like I said, you clearly overestimate the popularity of that particular article.
haha, I guessed I've been owned. I'll admit that I've grossly underestimated the traffic stumbleupon can deliver but I won't admit that my link wasn't really popular.
