Yes Ibm/Lenovo Thinkpad is very good. I have two of them. The old one thinkpad r40 (2 years old - now wives) and a new one r50(Lenovo already). Both are great no problems whatsoever. Keyboard is fantastic and lcd average i think but for my use great. It is very well built i think in overall. It doesnt stand out but i think i can compare it to Volvo if i compare to cars :)

On the other side i had some Gericom. I dont remember the model but i sold it after one week :) couple of months ago. It was more expensive than thinkpad r50 but a lot a lot weaker on all fields except when it comes to firewire. that my new thinkpad dont have

You could also look at some Toshiba or Dell. I heard they are great too. ! But i just cant live without trackpoint anymore :)

IBM thinkpad or dell are good brands. I can't believe Toshiba got 25% votes. That company makes sorry equipment. Then again, it is much better than Acer. I would never spend my hard earned money on an Acer Laptop.

What I liked about my old Toshiba is that they had used the same battery for years... they were not specific to one model year. This made it easy and cheap to find a new one. I had no problems with it. Look into the long-term parts replacement and repair, as well as the durabilily.

Got a Dell laptop over a year ago ...

Maybe because I'm running it 24/7, I burned out the built in graphics card (so they say - LCD screen not coming up)

Did get the extended warranty at the time, wasn't expensive, all things considered. They shipped me a box to send out to them - all expenses taken care of ...

As for everything else - it's been solid! Buying another one this year.

I own a Dell Inspiron 1200 with 1.25GB of Ram and it cost me a grand total (with the extra ram) 650 dollars.

Comes with 14.1 Screen and wireless card....

All I need since my desktop is 1337

I honestly prefer the Dell Insprion E1705, decent price, relatively high performance on a large widescreen, extended battery duration, my only qualm with it, it’s rather cumbersome.

For durability: Leveno. Or go with Toshiba or HP. Dell is cheap if you are going on cost alone.

Well, I've read about people having quite a bit of problems with Dell laptops. Even one of the Google engineers posted in their blog that they'd rather stay away from Dell, cause they struggled to have their laptop parts replaced when it died. I don't know how true that is... as these things go for every person that loves a product, there's one that hates it.

I've seen the Fujitsu/Siemens laptops and their specs look excellent for the price. However I've never used one, so I can't say how they perform.
