Being an ODP editor myself, I know there are some opportunists that are editors, and to some degree there are checks and balances, but I believe certain Metas pretty much do whatever they want. Some of these can be justified, so please don't think I am saying these are not supposed to be there (judge for yourself). Here is a listing of the domains with the most listings in DMOZ: http://www.whois.sc/internet-statistics/dmoz-listings.html If you look, I think you will find some real winners (sarcastic tone of course).
I might not be an editor for long! I just do a few small categories as a hobby. Sure, I list a few of my sites, but I could do without.
I wish this was a new thing. BTW does anyone know how much it "costs" to get a listing or several. (I know its "free", but we all know what Im talking about).
Let me clarify! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am no longer an editor as of a few minutes ago! This is indeed a rare and amazing moment! I'm not one to burn bridges...obviously, others don't share that perception. Fortunately, DMOZ could delete every site I have listed, and all would be fine.
dvduval - you are so out of touch you have no idea when you stopped being an editor. [And for the record, I have no control over wherther anyone is an editor or not]
I am definitely out of touch with DMOZ....permanently! Thanks for setting the record straight. I don't want to accuse anyone here. I have seen how the Metas at DMOZ are very protective of their "interests". I'm sure there is a lot of money at stake. I guess I don't blame them, but I think the list I provided in the first post is quite interesting: http://www.whois.sc/internet-statistics/dmoz-listings.html While there are lots of legitimate listings there, there are also lots of situations where an editor pretty much listed their whole site and ignored the competition mostly. Sure, the pages listed follow the guidelines, but there is no balance. Ex. 1200 pages for editor site, 1 page for similar site Anyone want to challenge this statement?
http://dmoz.org/editors/profile.cgi?editor=dvduval shows your profile - but since some of the categories no longer have your name at the bottom, it is apparent that for some reason you are not an editor any more.
The problem is also that there are 1,000s of cnn pages with content moved. No one seems to care about cleaning it up. Must be sad to be an honest editor and getting no support from those who are in charge.
