I would use it, I think larger forums can get away with A TON that smaller forums can't. They HAVE the visitors and ad revenue to not have to force anything. I do wonder what the perks would be for DP to use an seo mod unless they already do....

If DP doesn't have VBSEO it does not mean it has got everything "without" it. There are still many topics where DP does not appear in search results but the same topic with same content on other forums "with" VBSEO appear first.

Guys at VBSEO are not amateurs, their product VBSEO is great. I am using it without any problem and the results are great.

if you are expert in coding, html and knowing about php
    then
you surely have no need to vBSEO
you can even do better than DP
DP have many do follow links which is not good for SEO howver webmasters share because of these links

DP traffic makes up the need for SEO. If your forum is in the same level, then yes you could care less of vbseo.

Or who knows, dp owner may be trying to save a few bucks. I doubt it though:)

The one time I looked at it, all it's code was compiled so we weren't able to see if it was doing anything improperly, nor could we make sure some of our stuff wouldn't interfere with what it was doing. So it was just automatically nixed as an option from the start.

I think someone mentioned they don't require you to run hidden/compiled code anymore, but at this point it's not really necessary for us, so no point really... {shrug} All the important things (like removing duplicate content) has been done on our end by coding it ourselves, so...

I'd say, if you have a small forums trying to get on top, you must use vBSEO.
I am recommending it because it did a magic and traffic to my forums almost quadruple in a month of time.

Goes beyond just blocking certain things with robots.txt...

Let's take your forum for example:

    http://100fm6.com/vb/showthread.php?t=48660
    http://100fm6.com/vb/showthread.php?p=382465
    http://100fm6.com/vb/showthread.php?p=382515
    http://100fm6.com/vb/showthread.php?p=382633
    http://100fm6.com/vb/showthread.php?p=383228
    http://100fm6.com/vb/showthread.php?p=383719
    http://100fm6.com/vb/showthread.php?p=383721
    http://100fm6.com/vb/showthread.php?p=384434
    http://100fm6.com/vb/showthread.php?p=384487
    http://100fm6.com/vb/showthread.php?p=386550
    http://100fm6.com/vb/showthread.php?p=387885
    ... plus 10 other URLs...

You have 21 pages of duplicate content right there for a single thread.

I haven't looked at vBSEO since it first came out, so I don't know the details of it's duplicate content remover, but I would assume it would prevent issues like that. And if so, it's probably worth the price just for that alone if you are unable to do it on your own.

    nope !
    I have showthread.php?p= disallowed ! however showthread.php?t= is allowed
    see my robots file !

I have these urls not indexed so not duplicate
from my webmaster tools account I got only 200 duplicates for around 134,000 indexed urls which are really duplicate thread ... that is 2 members putting a thread twice or accidentally a member duplicate a thread and these are manually dealt with

the issue of showthread.php?p= can now also be overcome by parameter handling in webmaster tools

Yeah, you can block showthread?p= in robots. but still better to redirect to the true URL in my opinion. Then you don't loose out on links.

    for example:

http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?p=13037245 will redirect to the correct URL, so it doesn't need to be blocked, and we still get link juice for those URLs.

    this is great
    but how is that done?
    htaccess?
can you please tell me the code ?
    thanx

I also now thought why showind a link for post count any way
I will just hide post links from visitors by an if conditional
however the htaccess code will be nice !
really if the whole htacess file for DP and forum this will be gr8 ! :)
I want to know optimum cache setting and all in DP htaccess :)

We don't use any .htaccess files (or rules within Apache conf).

If I am not wrong, that would require huge amount of coding if not using the plugin system and can't be done with only htaccess file.
That's why I'd still recommend vBSEO.
It's not just a URL Rewrite {cURL (Content Relevant URL), is what they call it} system. It also use cannonical URL for showpost pages to keep the damage to minimum.
You can also replace the showthread.php?p= or showpost.php= with those cURLs and disable the post pages in Sitemap Generator to remove the duplicate contents.
And, overall, it also permanently redirects all of them to showthread.php pages (or the showthread cURLs) properly to keep the link juice and traffics.

I am just a satisfied vBSEO user and in no way affiliated with them.

I do not use it on any of my forums and have never seen a need for it.

The problem with all the testimonials and claims about how great it is that did those claiming great benefits from it get those benefits because that used vBSEO, or because there was a coincidental tweak in Google ranking algorithm, or did they around the same time get a couple of good extra backlinks, or did they ... etc etc

I think vBSEO is a great add-on and is well worth the money. One forum of mine doesn't use it, and it is extremely well optimized for its keywords and search queries (SERPs #1 and #2) while one of my newer forums does use vBSEO. The vBSEO has provided a nice boost in our crawling, indexing, and SERPs.

To answer your question: If DP doesn't use it, why should you? Keep in mind that DP has a TON of content that many sites/forums don't have. Very few forums are as active as DP is. Content is king (we all know), and consistently changing content is even better (that is, new posts/threads made frequently). This alone probably provides a huge SEO benefit to DP.
