As someone else noted, Alexa is most accurate for the 1,000 sites. It's an easy system to game if you just want to get in the top 100,000 or top 50,000. Aside from the blackhat method that involves multiple computers running the Alexa toolbar and refreshing on a page (there's more details to it, and I believe you can find them on this forum), you can also get a good ranking by making the site's topic related to web publishing, as people who use the Alexa toolbar are more likely to be web publishers.

Its only because Google has localized domains. Ever tried Google.com from India? It usually always redirects to Google.co.in. Hence, sending some millions of users to their Indian home page.

However, Youtube has only a single main domain.

There is NO way youtube can surpass Google, a long time back Techcrunch had covered facebook and Orkut, how facebook being way bigger than orkut was in same length with it as far as alexa is concerned.

is google the best thing to happen to the internet? or have i just seen one side to google.. i mean google does every basic need (and non basic need for that matter) that any internet user needs.. and just because google.COM is not the highest.. add all googles internet traffic together it will surpass yahoo without thinking about it!.. for me internet without google is like car with no wheels

    edit:

and add all of google owned companys... also.. plot yahoo, google and youtube on alexas graphs... youtube really low down!

Have you ever asked yourselves, why Yahoo is number one in alexa ranking?

I think I know the answer: I have Yahoo on my home page, when I start my browser, but I do everything else at Google. :D

Yahoo will probably be #1 on Alexa forever. Google won't pass Yahoo.

I love google. I love Yahoo. But how can you expect Google to pass yahoo when Yahoo offers more than Google?

Google is the # 1 search engine.
Yahoo is the # 2 search engine. But Yahoo also has like hundreds of other services and stuff. Yahoo is also the #1 email provider.
